I sometimes end up getting spam - or even email I originally signed up for but no longer want - and there is either no "unsubscribe from our mailing list" option or they simply do not respond to any requests to be removed from their lists.

So I came up with a simple tactic and script to deal with this.

Code:

<?php
/* SPAMMER LIST
Name <spammer@domain.com> Inbox: affected_account@affected_domain.com Count: 1
*/

$message="Please remove me (affected_account@affected_domain.com) from your mailing list. You will receive an additional 100 messages each time I receive another unsolicited email from you. Thank you.";

echo "This could take a minute or two, depending on how many anti-spam requests are being sent...";
for($x=0; $x<100; $x++){
        mail('spammer@domain.com','REMOVE ME FROM YOUR MAILING LIST',$message);
}
echo "Messages sent.";
?>

When I get another email from spammer@domain.com, I ++ the "Count" and add another 100 to $x. At some point, the theory is they won't want all these messages filling up their inboxes and take me off their lists.

You realize that botnets do most of the spamming, right? By replying all you are doing is verifying that your email exists for the email database that they sell to other spammers.

Even if, when I consistently get spam from the same address, I'll eventually overload its inbox and the owner will then have to do something about it, including make sure whatever bots he's running do not email me.

My spam folder has ~3.8k messages, and I never look at it (unless I accidentally mark something spam). When the odd spam gets through, I click 'spam.'

Gmail is probably something I won't easily be able to get rid of, at least not without comparable invasions of privacy. Some have mentioned other mail services I keep meaning to look at. The 'conversation' factor makes mail more useful, so that'd be a must.

@reagan.com email addresses are available for about $40/year. They're supposed to be fully private or something like that.

It's not just an address, there's also some function involved.

I don't get spam. I might get one spam message every other week or so. I've been using this email address for six years.

I should qualify that by saying that it doesn't get through to my email client. There is a constant stream of it in my GMail spam folder via the web interface, but I just ignore it and it goes away. I've perused it occasionally and found no false positives. Evil as they may be, Google does an excellent job filtering spam.
