Wouldn't I technically have to say 'Hello' to Dropbox first?

So, I have 18.2 GB free in dropbox and a nice linux client.

On the other hand I have 5 GB in google drive and no linux client.

Yep, I'm ditching dropbox right now :)

Does DropBox mine your every move to pummel ads at you? I've never used it, so I'm curious.

I've considered using something like that for free storage to work with via mobile devices, etc.

I won't be using Google's service, that much I know.

Lots of places do that. Shouldn't be legal IMO.

Be that as it may, upload it encrypted?

If you're concerned about privacy and use a public service, you're an idiot.

Seems more idiotic to be unconcerned.

actually most places don't
compare the statement from dropbox, skydrive and google-drive. Only google state they have the right to use whatever you put on the drive.

not saying im not using it, just pointing out out of the 3 main providers they have a strange clause (the others still infer your ownership)

http://cdn.thenextweb.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2012/04/drive21-520x99.png

its one thing to "be an idiot" about privacy with a public service, its a completely different class of retard who doesn't at least educate themselves around what a service implies.

That was what I was wondering too.

That was what I was wondering too.

virtualbox + ubuntu live cd + yopmail + some free time. With each referral you get 500MB. The only requisite is that the referred email installs dropbox and logs in. So invite some random yopmail account, boot the ubuntu live cd, install dropbox on it, login, voila. Repeat changing the mac address of the virtual machine (it seems dropbox identifies the machine using the mac).

When I did it each referral was 250MB (up to 10GB) but they increased it to 500MB (up to 18GB) retroactively.

Yep, I feel a bit dirty, but $10 per month for 50GB is more than I want to pay. Google's $25/year for 25GB is closer to what I'd pay. With a bit of luck dropbox offers something like that now that google does it. Or google gives us a decent (read: not wine) google drive client for linux.

In my university department I have a dozen fixed, public IP computers with unrestricted internet access, all the bandwith I could need and TBs of HD space (I'm the only root). But I still use dropbox. Those are ok for online backups, but that's not what I want. I want a software that syncs all my files automatically between my three computers and makes backups of old versions of files. When there is an open source client/server software like that, I'll simply forget about online services and run my own servers.

This is promising, but the last time I tried lsyncd some time ago it didn't work well.

Unless you've abused it recently, that's not normal, so be sure to have it checked.

Just been experimenting with drive, and reading around - one take on the TOS, is that they're needed to
build thumbnails of stuff you upload, move data around Google's various servers - so you can access and play stuff in public.

Without that, any of the above could be illegal.

I'm not going to start using this service myself, it seems that it would be suicide for Google to start exploiting drive as suggested.

Anyway, the premise looks good, never really bothered with online storage before. Any other services that give you a nice desktop folder and friendlier conditions ?

No, no, no. You're simply not getting it. Google is out to create a cloned army of cyclopic terrorbots bent on killing all of human kind.

Dropbox comes to mind.
