You're using an "ancient" version of gcc which doesn't support the new AVX instructions. Since you already have gcc 4.5.3 installed, I bet selecting it with gcc-config will fix the problem.

On the box with the emerge --info I provided earlier, I changed the gcc-config to [15] i686-pc-linux-gnu-4.5.3 ran . /etc/profile and tried to re-emerge glibc and the problem persists.

Thanks!

Moved from Networking & Security to Portage & Programming since it's a buildfail/toolchain issue

Switching to gcc 4.5.3 with gcc-config fixed the problem for me. Thank you.

hanj ... did you get your new 46 bit system to build glibc?
I had the same error with the same output and it turned out to be a kernel config issue.
When amd64 & use=multilib, then IA32_EMULATION=y is required.
Code:
Executable file formats / Emulations  --->
[*] Kernel support for ELF binaries
[*] Write ELF core dumps with partial segments
<*> Kernel support for MISC binaries
    [*] IA32 Emulation

This is the tread that pointed me in the right direction. http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-905184-start-0.htm
It's now also in the revised handbook in the kernel config part.
