I did a fresh install with 1.4rc1 release, and then installed Sun JDK on it.
When I ran 'java', I got this:

/opt/sun-jdk-1.3.1.06/bin/i386/native_threads/java: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

And then I noted that lib-compat wasn't installed!!
So make sure you do this after you boot up to 1.4rc1:

emerge lib-compat-1.0-r2.ebuild

sun-jdk depends on lib-compat, so shouldn't you file a bug report / contact the maintainer of the package with this info, don't think this section will help the average user. More (binary) packages probably have this same error / dependency.
