| Quote: | The infections, spotted "in the wild" by Finland-based computer security firm F-Secure and then quantified by Russian anti-virus program vendor Dr Web, come as hackers increasingly take aim at Apple computers.
"All the stuff the bad guys have learnt for doing attacks in the PC world is now starting to transition to the Mac world," McAfee Labs director of threat intelligence Dave Marcus told AFP.
"Mac has said for a long time that they are not vulnerable to PC malware, which is true; they are vulnerable to Mac malware."
Dr Web determined that more than 600,000 Mac computers may be infected with Flashback, which is designed to let hackers steal potentially valuable information such as passwords or financial account numbers.
Hackers trick Mac users into downloading the virus by disguising it as an update to Adobe Flash video viewing software.
Apple has long boasted that Windows machines are more prone to hacking than Macs. |

and security experts have for years warned that macs are much easier targets. With apple being very bad at closing holes and a mostly none existing security framework. _________________

Adobe software as an attack vector. How surprising I never would have guessed. |

I'm not an expert on malware, but over at the Heise forum people claim that flashback is old hat (being around since 2007) and that it is non-functional.
Dunno if it is right or the usual macfag denial. I mean, if these infections were found by redirecting some of the botnet requests to their own servers and extrapolating, there must be some macs in those botnets, I assume, thus the trojan works.
But what do I know? _________________ Kali Ma

McAfee makes antivirus software for the Macintosh. They want to sell it. People have been yammering for over a decade that Macs are about to be threatened by viruses to a degree similar to Windows machines, and it has never happened. There have been a pittance of cases, and this is one. What's far more likely to be hit is the iPhone and iPad, and even they are barely being touched compared to Android. _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

except that
a) mac virus are growing
b) macs are the easiest to attack group (shown at every pnw to own event)
and
c) a huge mac botnet makes everything you said look... kind of stupid
especially since:
d) apple first tried to deny the problem, then ignored it and now tries to make it look like they care with their removal tool - which is superflous at best because the anti-vir vendors already released ones.
Security experts are yelling for years that macs are the least secure plattform out there. But apple fanbois act like they are all wrong. Hilarious. _________________

I'm not a Mac fan-boy. How does one botnet make what I said stupid? It doesn't. It makes what I said accurate.
Do you have any conception of how many vast Windows-based botnets are operating?
Whether one is theoretically or technically harder or easier to infect is obviously either not true or not the over-riding variable, since Macs are still far less likely to be infected by malware. Pick a random Windows machine and the odds are that it's infected with something, is loaded with cruft, and is bogged down by all the anti-malware utilities that must be run on it just to keep it alive. _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

Too many apples and you're bound to have a Big Mac attack.
Plus I like their response by trying to shut down the security firm's site. Petty, stupid and or clueless. _________________ lolgov. 'cause where we're going, you don't have civil liberties.
