PostPosted: Sat Mar 31, 2012 10:35 pm    Post subject: Oh Brother, why my MFCJ6710DW doesn't work... Reply with quote

I thought I installed the correct drivers for my Brother MFCJ6710DW wireless multifunction device thingy, but in my Printer Configuration, I'm getting:

Printer State: Processing -- Printer not connected; will retry in 30 seconds...

When I try to print a test page, it shows that my status as "Processing"

any ideas?

See the log, increase CUPS verbosity if needed.

Filter "/usr/libexec/cups/filter/brlpdwrappermfcj6710dw" for printer "MFC-J6710DW" not available: No such file or directory

I do not know how you installed it, but obviously this file was copied somewhere else, find it and move it to /usr/libexec/cups/filter/.

I had the same problem with my DCP-J925DW. The solution is to make a symbolic link from the filterfile in /usr/lib/cups/filter/ to /usr/libexec/cups/filter/

Here is mine as an example.
Code:
ln -s /usr/lib/cups/filter/brlpdwrapperdcpj925dw /usr/libexec/cups/filter/brlpdwrapperdcpj925dw

I also have the instructions for my printer on my own homepage[1]. In case I have to redo it someday :-)

Are you connecting to the printer via ethernet, or USB.
If you use ethernet, then you need to specify the ip address instead of the printer name in cups.
Code:
Then just add the printer using the cups interface (localhost:631). The only thing you should be aware of, is that the address cups detects for the printer (wins name I guess) will not work. You need to specify the printer as "LPD/LPR Host or Printer" and enter the IP address instead.

I haven't tried using USB yet.

Why you say it didn't work? That particular error is gone, now you have next issue to address, your printer is not found, CUPS is trying an IPv6 connection which is failing.

thanks kechara and jaglover,

yes, it's a different error, but still not working, so I guess what I meant was 'still doesn't work, what next?'

here is the latest error message after setting up printer in CUPS

Keeping in mind I'm no CUPS expert I'd say you have not enabled administration over web interface or there is a broken conf file somewhere.

Quote:
E [04/Apr/2012:09:30:47 -0700] Bad request line "" from localhost!

I'd increase the verbosity to understand where this error comes from.

thanks jaglover,

how would I enable admin over web interface?

or how would I find if it's a broken conf file?

so...that leads me to the last question...how to increase verbosity?

as you see, I'm certainly no cups expert, my last printer installed relatively easily...

First, is your system healthy, have you run python-updater, revdep-rebuild and etc-update recently.

See man cupsd.conf, search for LogLevel.

Alright, I just "installed" Brother MFC-495CW drivers into my wife's PC. I downloaded the RPM package from Brother, extracted it into a tmp directory, looked at it and copied relevant files by hand into /usr/local/ and subdirectories. Their opensource drivers just did not work, but the binary ones do work.

ok...I just downloaded the rpm package...

so I guess that I use ark to extract it to /usr/local/

...what are the other subdirectories?

Maintain the directory structure in RPM, see if you get any errors, if you do move files to where Gentoo CUPS expects them to be. Be creative!

...ok...I extracted the rpm file to /usr/local/ and let the extraction take care of itself...

I then deleted the brother printer in with in cups administration...

I then used 'find printer' in manage printers,

it found the printer, and then asked for the proper files:

which were there this time!

...unfortunately, it still doesn't print...

Code:

/usr/local is a good choice for stuff that is not managed by portage, so I'd say yes, put it there.

I've no freakin' idea. The whole CUPS thing has always been a mystery for me. That said, I've always managed to get my printers working. Usually I just take my time, swear alot (my little dogs can sense when I'm setting up CUPS, they flee to kitchen), increase verbosity of logs, have beer, etc.
