This is only my second install of Gentoo ever, the first time I did a Stage 3 Install and followed the documentation to the letter. This time I actually wanted to tweak the system so that it was exactly what I wanted. Somewhere along the line I think I screwed something up, as now when I go to boot Gentoo everything loads properly except my kernel modules (not really 100% necessary to boot are they? I can worry about them later) and then the system hangs at:

Starting local [ok]

Google says it could have something to do with my inittab file or rc.local? I'm completely stumped, can anyone help a brother out? Good karma for not flaming the newbie and whatnot :)

TheFunk,

Welcome to Gentoo.

Your kernel modules may be required for correct startup. It depends what they are.
Starting local, is the very last thing that happens before the screen is cleared and and you get the login prompt.

Reboot and when you see the message "Press I for Interactive Startup" press the I key.
You can now choose to skip some services starting, and single step through the services being run.

Skip local at least and see if its any better.

Do you have sshd in the defualt runlevel?
Provided your network is up and sshd is started, logging in from another box is an option.

Does pressing Ctrl-Alt-F2 get you a login screen ?

Wow that was fast!

I think I disabled interactive startup when I configured my kernel. I don't have SSHD at my default runlevel either.

Ctrl+Alt+F2 gets me a login screen though! :D

TheFunk,

The setting for interactive startup is in /etc/rc.conf, from memory. Its not a kernel option as starting your services is something that openrc does.

Response speed here is all a matter of luck. I look at threads I have posted in, unanswered posts and posts from the last 24 hours. Other regular helpers will do something similar.
When Its quiet, I help out on IRC too.

Thanks regardless, I can't believe I didn't think to check another terminal. From the second terminal I was able to log in without a hitch. Now I just have to figure out why the first terminal won't show up. The main concern was to get the thing to boot though, and that objective has been accomplished!
