Hi,

can I "emulate" the win progs with XP on my System (NTFS) or does it just work with Fat or Win98?

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but have you read the Wine FAQ? Specifically, the section entitled, What do I need in order to use Wine ?

However there are some cases where using native dlls are necessary...
though they are becoming less and less.

You'd best check the Wine Application Database for the answer to that. If it's Office you need, I highly recommend Crossover Office, although it doesn't seem to support OfficeXP officially right now.

On top of checking the Wine Application Database, I'd actually try it out.
I've ran into cases where they say it should work, and it doesn't even by a farshot... and vice versa.
VMWare always works, though.

I guess I first have to check out what's all about wine and how it works, before trying to install Office or IE ... :(

An advice might be in place here when it comes to WINE. Do not trust what is written everywhere about the wonders of WINE. I have tried several versions of it, and spent countless hours battling with it, and in the end the only three apps I managed to run on my system was calc.exe, notepad.exe and mirc.exe. Note that I tried almost everything installed on my windows systems, and tried using it against a Win2k install and a WinME install.

YMMW I guess, especially if gentoo actually has a good ebuild for it that may do something I didnt (my installs were on one slackware system and one LFS system), but the only reliable way of finding out if something works is to try it. I have a feeling it would be quite a disturbing situation to find out that something didn't work as it was supposed to after nuking your windows install. Also read their FAQ, which states some things about the systems to run it with. I beleive that currently using WINE alone works better than WINE with WinXP.

Regards,
/Stary

Well, you don't need to install this fu**** M$ crap, if you want to play games based on Windoze, but however, maybe this is not the answer you exptected, but don't even think about dual boot! If you wanna linux, then forget about this buggy M$ crap!

Linux (Gentoo) rulez - M$ sux!
