Just curious - does kde-sunset use the "enterprise" branch of KDE Martin is talking about? I wasn't aware that it existed, and was actually wondering how RHEL and OpenBSD continued to support KDE 3.

Frankly, I don't think that Gentoo is *designed* to keep using several years old code, at least not more than binary distros. With some effort/carefulness it is possible to do so, but as things go with a rolling release distro, dependencies break or are entirely removed (such as famous HAL) because bug and security fixes often just arrive by version bumps instead of backports in the tree. All the time packages are removed from the tree because of being unmaintained. Quite in contrast to a distro such as Debian or RHEL where, due to all the backporting going on, you can keep using KDE3 and at the same time retain a reasonably secure system.

Thanks. This is a thread about kde3. Please no more off-topic posts.

I think my post was all about KDE3/Trinity. If your thread is supposed to be just about kde3-praise, then I'll let you have that.

Yes, that's interesting, first I've heard of it. I doubt it.

Changing the default browser. Most people don't want to use konqueror any more as the default browser.
Go to the control center -> KDE components -> Component chooser -> Web Browser

In the input pane enter (e.g.) the output of "which chromium.

Some buzz about trinity. Will we ever get our own ebuild?
http://www.howtogeek.com/106840/how-to-install-trinity-on-ubuntu-relive-kde-3/

btw, the razor-qt thread here should be very interesting to those people who find kde3 fun.
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-913958-highlight-razorqt.html

I have already emerged some of the bare qt apps they mention there (qtfm and qps!) and junked the kde4 equivalents (dolphin and, well, nothing). But being naked qt applications they are as much to kde as anything else.

Meanwhile we soldier on with kde3 and kde-sunset.

Cheers,

jon

Hi, guys,
Hopefully I will not be beaten for reviving this old thread... :D

I'm trying to emerge kde 3.
I installed layman, pulled in the overlay successfully. but:

Code:

LearningRight portage # emerge -pv =kde-meta-3.5.10

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "net-misc/mDNSResponder".
(dependency required by "kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.10-r6[-bindist,-avahi]" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-base/kcheckpass-3.5.10" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-base/kdebase-meta-3.5.10" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-base/kde-meta-3.5.10" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "=kde-meta-3.5.10" [argument])

Does anybody know where is this package or how to solve it otherwise?

I barely remember that dnsresponder was not a good thing when kde 3 was in the main tree...

Thank you.

It seems you can avoid mDNSResponder choosing +avahi, but that might open an other can of worms.

genstorm,
Which file I need to modify?
Looks like changing "/etc/portage/package.use" does not work as layman sets its own Portage tree...

Thank you.

No, it's all the same. Either set avahi in your make.conf or specifically for kdelibs in your package.use file/directory.

Yes, it is the same.
And it was written right there: "[-bindist -avahi]"

Now, before the fun begins:

Code:

LearningRight samples # emerge -pv =kde-meta-3.5.10

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

It looks like I will have 3 different versions of "automake" on this box. :D

Just wondering if the real Portage will work correctly and pick-up the right tool when using normal tree?

Thank you.

This isn't unique to overlay or kde3 use, plus it wouldn't get slotted if it didn't work.

I don't know what you mean with the "real" portage here - the kdelibs ebuild will be doing the work for you.

Well there is a real Portage tree and the overlay Portage tree.

So, here I go. KDE 3 with GNOME 2.

Thank you for the help.

Physically, there are ebuilds in different places, but really there's no difference in usage. :)

Any idea?

Trying to set "legacyssl" on kdelibs didn't help. Still the same error.

Here I run kde-3.5.10 with =net-dns/avahi-0.6.30-r1 (from kde-sunset)
The main tree version is no good for me.

Also I have (for some reason) installed openssl 0.9.8x and 1.0.1c

This compiles kdelibs with no problems.

I hope this info helps.

Here is what I currently have:

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Which USE-flags did you use for openssl-0.9.8x?

Thank you.

If those are dependencies of kdelibs-3.5 the information should be passed on to whoever maintains kde-sunset overlay, for the benefit of everyone else still using it. I have recommended this in the past on a few occasions but was dismissed with regard to me being a KDE4 user.

As long as this isn't solved, the thread title should be edited to reflect the sad reality, it really is misleading these days. Right now everyone trying out kde-3.5 from kde-sunset seems to be on his or her own pulling together information from forums, bugzilla and gentoo-desktop mailing list.

Code:

* Found these USE flags for dev-libs/openssl-0.9.8x:
 U I
 - - bindist  : Disable EC/RC5 algorithms (as they seem to be patented)
 - - gmp      : Adds support for dev-libs/gmp (GNU MP library)
 - - kerberos : Adds kerberos support
 + + sse2     : faster floating point optimization for SSE2 capable chips
 - - test     : Workaround to pull in packages needed to run with FEATURES=test. Portage-2.1.2 handles this
internally, so don't set it in make.conf/package.use anymore
 + + zlib     : Adds support for zlib (de)compression

What gcc version are we talking about? I remember reading something in gentoo-desktop about gcc-4.6 breaking qt3 or kde-3.5...

I found this on gentoo-desktop:

Apologies.  Like an idiot, I misread the ebuild.

The following USE flag settings allow kdelibs to compile successfully for me:

[ebuild   R   ~] kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.10-r10::kde-sunset  USE="acl alsa branding jpeg2k spell tiff
-arts -avahi -bindist -cups -debug -doc -fam -kdehiddenvisibility -kerberos -legacyssl -lua -openexr
-utempter"

From many other comments, don't expect any more fixes for kde-sunset overlay to come, it is broken. Also, this: http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/gentoo/desktop/261259

Well, I have the same flags set here
Code:
[ebuild   R   ] kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.10-r10  USE="acl alsa arts avahi cups fam spell tiff -bindist -branding -debug -doc -jpeg2k -kdehiddenvisibility -kerberos -legacyssl -lua -openexr -utempter"

I remerged kdelibs:3.5 just now to check that it works and it is ok.
Note however that my ebuild includes a patch as discussed here
