Posted: Sun Feb 12, 2012 11:33 pm Post subject: KDE 3.5.10 still works pretty well! |
|
|
After some scrubbing and careful work, I have KDE 3.5.10 working just fine on my system. Yes it's old, yes it lacks eye candy of all kinds, that's a feature, not a bug. I can run kde4 apps (for example ktorrent and k3b) no problem, but I let the 3.5 version of kwin running everything. The nice thing about it is that it's blazingly fast.
Some pointers to do this:
- You have to emerge layman, and add (laymam -a) kde-sunset.
- This gives you a 3.5 slot for kde apps (e.g. emerge konqueror:3.5)
- There's kde-meta:3.5 (wow! I didn't realize just how little I use of it!) as well
- Enable both qt3 and qt4 use flags.
- You have to choose between avahi and mDNSResponder, as kdelibs requires one or the other. I eventually was forced to ditch avahi (which is required by googleearth), because it caused a cascade of problems I never could solve (having to do with hal).
Pretty much everything works.
For the record I'm using:
Code: |
jesnow@Armstrong ~ $ equery list hal gcc dbus xorg-server
* Searching for hal ...
[I-O] [ ] sys-apps/hal-0.5.14-r4:0
* Searching for gcc ...
[IP-] [ ] sys-devel/gcc-4.5.3-r1:4.5
* Searching for dbus ...
[IP-] [ ] sys-apps/dbus-1.4.16:0
* Searching for xorg-server ...
[IP-] [ ] x11-base/xorg-server-1.11.2-r2:0
|
Anybody have any tips?
I've gotten a lot of negative reaction on this point from people who apparently take it personally that anybody would choose not to use kde 4. Please do not post here on the topic of how moving to kde 4 is the solution to any problem.
Cheers,
Jesnow |

Theres a 'kde3 fans' thread halfway down the page. Might be a good one to add you findings to? _________________ The United States has announced that it will deploy thoughts and prayers in the battle against online extremism.

I too have stayed with kde-3.5.
I can run the good kde4 apps e.g. okular, okteta, k3b, even dolphin.
from within kde3
I have removed hal and I use uam for automounting USBs and CDs
Recently I had a hitch with kdelibs-3.5 after an autoupdate of libpcre
but easily solved.
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-911958.html
No good reason to move over to kde4 yet.
I have kde4 on a test machine to keep an eye on developments.
Konsole4 is better, I also like the idea of workspaces but I hate
the useless Neponuke/Aconadi/strigi/soprano/semantic crap that
slows the machine to a crawl. If you want Kmail you cannot disable them. |

I started that thread, but people were flaming each other and kde3, I'm hoping the title of this thread will be less inflammatory to those who think kde4 is the Only True Way.

No, this is just legacy KDE3 with updates to keep it emerging. Thanks by the way, many thanks to the people (who I don't know) who are doing the work in kde-sunset.
From what I've been able to glean, kde-sunset will never advance beyond 3.5.10. TDE is on 3.5.13 already, and I presume that we gentoo people will someday have a migration path. Currently I know of no ebuild for Trinity at all. I certainly don't want to have that be my first try at ebuild writing.
Any comment from kde-sunset maintainers?
Cheers,
Jon. |

I have a separate partition with a Gentoo install.
I'm getting sick of kde4,guess I'll try installing 3.5 from kde-sunset.
Two years ago I installed kde-3.5.10 on my wife's lappy, never any problem.
.xsession-errors is ~500 bytes, compare that to all the 50kb nonsense you get in kde4.
I'll keep you posted.

Well no luck.
kdelibs failed to compile.
hal-0.5.14-r4 nowhere to be found.
It's late here,I'll try again tomorrow.

I've decided to forget about kde3.
Too much hassle.

This is a real problem -- hal is in the overlay but not in any of the overlay repositories.
Quote: |
jesnow@Armstrong ~ $ equery list hal -po
* Searching for hal ...
[I-O] [ ] sys-apps/hal-0.5.14-r4:0
|
The files you need are:
/usr/portage/distfiles/hal-0.5.14.tar.bz2
/usr/portage/distfiles/hal-0.5.14-gentoo-patches-5.tar.bz2
/usr/portage/distfiles/hal-info-20091130.tar.gz
/usr/portage/distfiles/hal-0.5.14-gentoo-patches-4.tar.bz2
They are not easy to find at the moment. I found them finally, but they need to be put in the kde-sunset overlay repository.
Does anybody know how to contact the kde-sunset maintainers?

hi,
i am one of the maintainers of kde-sunset.
hal and hal-info are in the overlay since January. Only source-packages are not available on the mirrors. I accidentally moved them on my server to the trinity-overlay instead of symlinking. I will ask the other mirror-maintainers to sync those files again. The should already be availabe again via emerge or you can pull those files via http://mirror.hasnoname.de/kde-sunset/ .
greetings,

So it looks like there will be a separate trinity overlay. I'm guessing that I will migrate to that as soon as it's available.

After strowi's post I tried again.
Hal compiles ok now but I can't get kdelibs to compile.
I am getting fed up with it.

You have to keyword kdelibs to get -r10
I hate "works for me" type answers, but I have it running on three machines here, pretty sure it will work. The usual method is to post emerge --info and a build log. At least the part where it blows up.

Fair play. People should be free to use what they want imo

Yeah, I have had to part company with Kmail and remove all that crap. "-semantic-desktop" useflag, etc. I'm now using Claws, it's not pretty, but it works. _________________ The United States has announced that it will deploy thoughts and prayers in the battle against online extremism.

I read that there's a new DE:razor-qt.
I think I'll try that instead of kde3.

Good to know. I have an old netbook with KDE3.5.9 on it and I'm reluctant to upgrade it as I fear it won't run KDE4. Thing is, can I do this overlay thing whit an already running install? Nothing against KDE4, running it on the desktop and laptop (with Claws and -semantic-desktop) but the netbook is another thing. _________________ Expert in non-working solutions |

I made a new install with razorqt as DE.
Looks promising as a replacement for kde3.
Still too early to say it would be what I'm looking for.

They should be back in the overlay repositories. I haven't checked -- are they there?

Well I installed razorqt together with kwin and kdm.
I wanted to have the same windows as in KDE is why I used kwin.
To make logging in easier I also installed kdm.
I am quite pleased with it so far.
I want to install a lot more applications and if it pans out ok it'll be my desktop on my work install.
.xsession-errors complains about authentications,I'm going to investigate.
That's all I have in .xsession-errors,compared to the endless worthless crap in kde-4 this is a relief.

In the meantime, this is a thread about KDE3. I'm glad you like razor-qt, I may check it out myself, perhaps you could start a new thread about it. |

It is nice that KDE3 is still working for *some* people, but 'pretty well' is probably an exaggeration unless you add '...for me' to the topic - look into the old KDE3 thread to see that one of its main advocates in this forum has at last given up on it.
Btw Martin Gräßlin, one of the main kwin developers, has some valid points to add about the Trinity Project: http://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/2012/02/having-a-look-at-the-oldnew-desktop-environments/
He also suggests razorqt for those who seek a Qt4 alternative to KDE4.
For a less outdated KDE3, interested users can look into CentOS which seems to provide the old KDE3 codebase with security updates and still keeps the old HAL around. |

Once something breaks that I can't do without I will drop kde3. I have kde3 running on 3 very different systems, and it all works.
Thanks for the pointers to trinity, CentOS and razor-qt, which I think most people here also know about. As I have said, this is a thread for people who are still keeping their KDE3 running and don't want to switch yet.
Mr. Gräßlin divides us into three groups: "Haters", "Lightweights" and "classics". Fair enough. Let me add "retros" who have their machine working just fine thank you, and won't move if they don't have to. Gentoo is *designed* to give us this freedom, nicht wahr?
Thanks,
Jon |
