|
|
| Quote: | With an area of 15,000 square km and with depths reaching more than 800m, Lake Vostok is similar in size to Lake Baikal in Siberia or Lake Ontario in North America.
More than 300 such bodies of water have now been identified across Antarctica. They are kept liquid by geothermal heat and pressure, and are part of a vast and dynamic hydrological network at play under the ice sheet.
Some of the lakes are connected, and will exchange water. But some may be completely cut off, in which case their water may have been resident in one place for thousands if not millions of years. Russian researchers will try to establish just how isolated Lake Vostok has been. If it has been sealed then micro-organisms new to science are very likely to have evolved in the lake.
Nonetheless, there will be concerns about introducing contamination, and there have been criticisms of the methods used by the Vostok drilling team.
Vladimir Chuprov, from Greenpeace Russia, commented: "There is a set of risks which can damage this relic lake and some of them are connected with polluting the lake with the drilling fluids, as well as other stuff that can get into this unique lake." |

Yeah, and there's also a risk that stuff will get out, like pathogens humans have never been exposed to. _________________ Obama killed bin Laden like Nixon was the first man on the Moon. |

It's the size of lake Ontario. There could be a pre-ice-age civilization living under there. Telepathic, translucent squid smart enough to get into MENSA. Or Australopithecus Afarensis living beneath glass bubbles with geothermal grow-lights. Or maybe there's a set of stairs leading down to the control panel for the planet, which is actually a space ship with a billion years worth of barnacles and slime built up on it (of which we are part). That's just one of hundreds of interconnected lakes. _________________ Obama killed bin Laden like Nixon was the first man on the Moon. |

Well, the risk is IMHO close to inexistent.
- If you mean a mineral-chemical pathogen then it is unlikely because the composition of the ice has been carefully analysed during the drilling.
It would be surprising if the components of the "surface" of the lake were significantly different or at least unpredictable from the components of the ultimate last meters of ice found before opening.
- If you mean biological then it is as well unlikely as (analysis should confirm this soon) the water of the lake contains 20 to 30 times more oxygen than normal water. That is to say that the concentration in hydrogen peroxyde is very high. As everybody know, hydrogen peroxyde is a good biocide.
But yes there is a significant risk of chemically polluting this lake as... nobody can tell if the russians actually used the products that were recommended or if they carried on with their original and less expensive but more harmful method. _________________ In theory there are no differences between theory and practice. How did those pathogens survive in the lake for thousands of years without humans to infect? _________________ Truck!!

So, you thought people who realize you were making reference to "James Arness" (a.k.a. "Matt Dillon", fictional gun-slinging U.S. Marshall, who has no business being mentioned in the context of drilling through the ice to Lake Vostock), by posting "Dmitrii Arnesschenko"?

Dude, Arness played the Thing in the 1951 classic The Thing, which is a story of an alien recovered out of the (in this case) Arctic ice. Said alien then goes on the typical rampage.

I think that bit of trivia was actually buried in a crusty brain cell somewhere. It wasn't call The Thing, though. You're thinking of the '80s remake with Kurt Russel. The original was called, "The Thing from Another World".
You know what though? You know trivia about movies, the remakes of which have themselves been remade. You know how old that makes you?
I've always thought that original version was best, though (at least in terms of acting, if not special effects).
None of this excuses your "Dimitrii Arnessschenko" though. I'm going to make a guess here: do your daughters make fun of you for bad jokes and making up nonsense words, and wandering around the house muttering them? _________________ Obama killed bin Laden like Nixon was the first man on the Moon. |
