Hi!
This issue stared when I installed gnome-extra/docky and when I execute docky it shows some messages warning that some features will be disables because desktop effects are not enabled.
I'm using Gnome 2, by gnome-light package:

So then I checked Gnome settings at: System -> Preferences -> Appearance, but theres is no 'Visual effects' tab.
Why this tab is not?
How can I enable 'desktop effects'?
I have an Intel graphics card:

and graphics acceleration is enabled. I have tested using glxgears and it runs pretty.
What's wrong?
I have checking some forums and in one of them suggest to apply this setting:

making metacity as a compositing manager, but when it is actived all desktop go like fog (too dark), so then I rollback disabling this setting and desktop looks better.

afaik, enabling "desktop effects" in gnome2 is what you did : enable compositing in nautilus.
If that doesnt work for you make sure that hardware acceleration is working properly. Remember that gallium doesnt work for intel yet.

gnome-base/nautilus package does not have any 'composite' use flag, then checking its ebuild file, there is anything about composite at configure flags:

I have activate metacity as composite manager and It works fine, but with some details.
How can I be sure that hardware acceleration is working properly?
I only have tested this using glxgears and checking its FPS output.
Please suggest me some others tests.
