Something has gone wildly wrong with my portage  I can't seem to execute any emerge without getting EAPI errors. In searching this forum for possible resolution steps, I understood running python-updater could help, however this fails as well (see below). Can anyone point me to some relevant threads or give me any suggestions for resolution?

Looks like you may have had a bad sync. Run emerge --sync again, then re-try.

Thanks for the suggestion. I thought I had already done this once or twice, but I did it again today to be sure. Same resulting error from the python-updater.
Any other thoughts?

I would say you have a problem with RDEPEND file in /var/db/pkg/2 packages name
You may emerge --nodeps -1 =dev-python/setuptools-0.6.21 so portage will rebuild the package and so, re-create the DEPEND file for it without checking its dependencies.
But considering you also have the same error for Pango-1.221 then chance two files are "invalid" comes more from filesystem in unhealthy state, but as both packages share the same filename (the RDEPEND), it could be a portage bug (lowered by assuming such a bug would have been trigger by many users, and the forum seems calm on that issue)
First thing you should do is fsck your partition that hold /var |

I have /var/tmp and /usr/portage on separate partitions and they check clean, but I have to many processes with their hooks into /var so I will need to reboot and do that one from home this evening. Thanks for the suggestions.

Not sure how the files became corrupt. I rebooted the system and forced a fsck on /var. After this I deleted the RDPENDS of about 10 packages emerge complained about and did the emerge --nodeps to rebuild. I was finally able to get python-updater working again.
