Jebus said I should raise taxes!
Quote:
Obama’s remarks Thursday at the National Prayer Breakfast were his most explicit account of how his personal religious beliefs factor into his decision-making on the nation’s pressing problems. The comments came amid election-year criticism from Catholic groups and some Republicans that the president is waging a war on religion following his decision to require church-affiliated institutions to cover free birth control for employees.

Speaking to more than 3,000 people at the annual breakfast, Obama said “faith and values” should play as much as role in tackling the nation’s challenges as sound decision-making and smart policies.

He said, for example, that his own call for fairness in the tax code — a central tenet of his State of the Union address and his 2012 campaign — is both economically sound and consistent with the teachings of Jesus.

Jebus would only be cool with taxing the rich.

Jebus would go after the bankers. He threw the money-lenders out of the temple.

Somebody should start a sect that goes after bankers instead of abortion doctors.

Isn't that the Democrat Party? Or is the banker requirement exclusive? They're anti-Israel too, so that should count for something.

I'd say his biblical understanding isn't really up to snuff.
Something I posted in the other thread, that should at least strike a chord even for areligious folk with hints of governmental mistrust:

TFB wrote:

4 So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. 5 They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.”

6 But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD. 7 And the LORD told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. 8 As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”

10 Samuel told all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking him for a king. 11 He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots. 12 Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. 16 Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle[c] and donkeys he will take for his own use. 17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the LORD will not answer you in that day.”

19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”

Time to get rid of the king we've chosen, as advised, so that rendering unto Caesar ceases to be relevant.

I wonder what Samuel's god would say now about our king taking not a tenth of our grain and vintage but a third of everything.

He would answer, but the queue is loaded up with sporting events.

Our king? What about those who chose the king.

To be fair, I could never finish either Bible nor Quran, but then I came out of the closet and said that I was an atheist. Which wasn't fun when I was in Montreal. I worked at this company where it was completely OK to chose ANY religion as long as you had one. We were having lunch, and in the middle of it I got asked the question and I dropped the bomb where I said that I wasnt religious and "guess Im an atheist". Everybody went silent and uncomfortable, and I remember thinking "Ooook, time to get out of here"

Montreal has always seemed like a Catholic town to me. They've got more things named after saints than any place I've been.

Yeah they are bit over the top, tho I when trying to understand people living somewhere, I always imagine how it was before electricity and central heating. Imagine being stranded in Montreal in winter, couldn't be much fun. No wonder they build cathedrals every block or so, the people must be going mental. I was going mental waiting for a buss for 10 minutes, -34 C with wind chill.

Religious texts were a passion of mine when I was a teen/young-adult. I had read the Bible before any of the others, but the first religious text that I ever really connected with was Bardo Thodol. I read that one when I was 15, and it was really fascinating. A sort of meta programming of the mind during life as a preparation of what happens after death. From there I ended up reading most of the major religious texts, and some of the more esoteric ones as well... an English translation of a Jain work titled... iiirc, on the nature of reality. I, unfortunately, lent it to an anthropology professor who never returned it :( Utterly fascinating stuff though, as the Jains were working with a sort of metaphysical atomic theory. Your atman is vibrating via action, those vibrations attract karmic particles, and those particles bind you to this physical realm. By ceasing all action (including desires etc) your 'mind' would no longer attract those particles and float up and reflect reality... like silver balloon.

So, unlike most atheists, I've actually studied a great number of religious books. Hindu/Buddhist/Jain concepts were always the most fascinating... while I found the Semitic works to be the most authoritarian and "broken".

If Kalacakra is the most enlightened, then the Qu'ran is the most deranged.

Quran is weird, because it causes me brain-pain. Every sura is repetitious with Allah is greatest, and after a while you go "yeah I got it already". Then the text itself is ... I dunno schizophrenic somehow.
