Quote:
The Swedish Supreme Court will not hear an appeal from the founders of The Pirate Bay against prison sentences and fines imposed by the Swedish Court of Appeals, the court said on Wednesday.

Over a year ago, the Court of Appeals sentenced Fredrik Neij, Peter Sunde, and Carl LundstrAPm to 10 months, eight months and four months of jail time, respectively. The court also said they must collectively pay a 46 million kronor (US$6.7 million) fine.

The Supreme Court hears cases that are considered important for the direction of Swedish law enforcement, or when there are special circumstances. The court has reviewed the material in the Pirate Bay case and found that neither reason to hear the case exists, it said.
Separately, Gottfrid Swartholm Warg has been sentenced to one year in prison. Due to illness, Warg never showed up at the appeals trial, and recently had his verdict in the district court confirmed.

The Pirate Bay case has been contentious from day one, and not everyone thinks Wednesday's decision was the right choice.

"The Pirate Bay case is fundamentally important and it is unfortunate that the Supreme Court chooses not to hear the case," said Anna Troberg, leader of the Pirate Party in Sweden, in a statement.

In related news, the people still operating the site have switched it from piratebay.org to pireatebay.se
Quote:
The blog Torrent Freak, however, is reporting that sources inside TPB said the site made the switch to avoid a domain seizure by U.S. authorities. The file-sharing site suspected the U.S. was waiting for the Swedish court's ruling before taking action against TPB.

Even though The Pirate Bay is based in Sweden, the ".ORG" domain is operated by the Public Internet Registry based in the U.S. and thus the domain name is within the reach of American authorities.

They waged in that "clever" manner that since they didn't actually host any content themselves, they couldn't be touched. Which is a sad case of well off geeks thinking they are smarter then the others, and don't see it coming.

Could also be that swedes think they know everything best and that if they decide that things are supposed to be a certain way, then everybody else should comply, because otherwise it would be outrageous. Well other people may not be as smart, but are still gonna do what they do, so the power doesn't lie within having a "smart" opinion, but in having power to get it your way, regardless if it is smart or politically correct.

Also, having a domain name "Pirate Bay" didn't really help. It's like teenagers not realizing what works and what doesn't in real world.

Yeah, they didn't count on blatant corruption and state department coercion.

Are you saying that the Swedish courts are the puppets of the Obama Administration? I find it hard to believe.

No. They waged on technicality, and lost. If they want to be martyrs against corruption, that is their choice of course, and they can be praised for it, but if you are gonna be bold and challenge multi-billion industry, and expect to win, you gotta know better. Blatant corruption and state department coercion? Sure. It helps to know who you are fighting against beforehand.

Thats like me watching ninja movies and thinking I could win over Mike Tyson if I trip him. Then complaining that after I tripped him, he got up and punched my head in.

They seem to be on the run. At least no longer in sweden at the moment, see piratebay blog.

Quote:
Our 3 friends and blood brothers have been sentenced to prison. This might sound worse than it is. Since no one of them no longer lives in Sweden, they won’t go to jail. They are as free today as they were yesterday

And do they really expect to see the money?

edit: not really on the run

Quote:
Svartholm, who is thought to now live in Cambodia, was already facing jail after failing to attend the appeal hearing in 2011.

Neij is thought to live in Thailand, while Sunde divides his time between Berlin and the Swedish city of Malmo.
...

Samuelson said that if Svartholm again refused to cooperate he faced an international arrest warrant.

“If he doesn't turn up, then he's on the run and then they'll try to get him through Interpol,” he said. “They're going to hunt him and try to catch him.”

Sunde, on the other hand, said he would accept the sentence.

“I’ll live with whatever sentence I’ll get in the end. I’ll just finish my book. The fight goes on with or without me, I’m just a pawn. But at least I’m a pawn on the morally right side. I’m proud as hell of what I’ve done.”

Good point. But, I wasn't trying to sell those words of wisdom. If I had put thousands of hours of effort into crafting them, copyrighted them, and was selling them, then it would be theft. Whether or not you believe it's theft, it's the law. Breaking the law is not necessarily the optimal means of protesting against it. Even if it were, protesting against the law is not protesting against the corruption.

"would of" is a typical error native English speakers make. In fact I have never seen a non-native speaker use it.

It probably comes from "would've."

It does... and ichbin's point is valid. Native speakers have heard "would've" spoken since birth, while not necessarily realizing that it is a contraction of "would have".
