Now that's what I call a holiday :)

I've been all through Mt. Jefferson over the years. Got dusted with ash from Mount St. Helens on one trip. Same with the Sisters, and other smaller Wilderness areas. But the Grand Daddy of them all was the Eagle Cap. Words just cannot explain.

Planes and trains are for cissies. Real men walk, cycle, paddle, and ski (cross-country not that pansy-assed downhill stuff). The only places worth visiting, the only places offering adequately challenging, muscular, adventure, are off the grid.

Those new-fangled internal frame packs. I still use a Kelty external frame.

I don't travel (airlines) with my backpack (osprey atmos), but if you haven't tried a good internal frame pack, you don't know what you're missing. So much easier to carry more weight more comfortably.

As for airline baggage, I use a carry on similar to what most people use. Found it 50% off somewhere. Between that and a small Black Diamond daypack I can carry enough for a week without doing laundry.

I'll have to say it is nice having real mountains close by. In SC the appalachians were only a 3 hour drive from me, but they just don't compare to the CO rockies so far (yeah I know, this is still new to me). The only problem I have at the moment is how hard its been to save money. Turns out its pretty easy to spend money on winter sports.

Yeah, I've used an internal frame a couple of times, and they are superior.

When I hike (meaning up in mountains where you actually need balance) small packs (50-ish litre) with internal frame that fit your body is a way to go, pack heavy stuff in the bottom and all that.

For airlines, carry-on bag if smaller trip, if longer trip then I go with hard case, so it can take some abuse (which it will). Big backpacks are valid only if you are hitch-hiking and alike, and I havent done that since my 20-s, but back then, when taking train across europe, it was perfect.

I thought we were talking about traveling (like for work), not walking across Death Valley.

I have two back-packs.

One is laptop and motorcycle-suitable (can't remember the brand but I think it's North Face). It's medium-sized but has hip pads and a wast belt. It has a special pocket for an MP3 player and another for a "come save me" radio (implying it's so hard-core that it's meant for use by people likely to find themselves buried in avalanches). It's fairly narrow, streamlined and water-tight, and I got if for making overnight trips on my motorcycle. I can actually wear it while riding, or it straps onto the back of the seat nicely (has loops and straps in the right places). It's a good carry-on for casual travel.

The other is a standard U.S. military ALICE pack. I use it for hiking, camping, and longer casual trips. They are rugged, can carry an enormous load (good frame, padding, and belt), and have a standardized system of webbing that lets you securely attach all kinds of other things. Also, I'm very used to it, having had one practically grow roots in my back during Ranger School.

We were but this is an interesting discussion too.

Yeah just checked photos, it seems pretty good. The frame dimensions are like 50-l pack, but it is wider and "thicker" which should allow for greater weight and bigger pockets. The only thing that could throw it off balance is rotation along vertical axis, but that doesnt happen that often. Maybe I should get one from one of the surplus stores.

"Securely" means not only that it won't become detached but that it doesn't flap around making a racket like a peddler's wagon.

There are predators that are larger than me out there with sharp claws and big teeth. I don't want to surprise anything.

This is just like my pack, only mine is blue.

Looks like good load-bearing arrangement, up nice and high like it should be, which minimizes fatigue (the downside being that if you trip going downhill you will do a header worthy of failblog and that tall frame is going to drive your head right into the ground).

You're right about noise; I'm just programmed into being in sneaky mode whenever I get in the woods.

I'm the same way in areas where it's more populated, but once you get away from the day hiker (never more than a mile or 2 from their car), I don't care about noise so much. It is kind of strange with the amount of snow in the mountains how quiet it can get out here. Its kind of weird when you stop for a second and realize how loud you were being.

Speaking of snow, quiet as crap right now outside the apartment. Had about 2 ft since last night, and between the snow and the fact that nobody is out right now, its kind of eery(eerie?).
