Maybe the headaches aren't related to caffeine...
Drink diet pop all the time? Look forward to VASCULAR DEATH | Quote: | "vascular events such as stroke, heart attack, and vascular death".
"Our results suggest a potential association between daily diet soft drink consumption and vascular outcomes," says Hannah Gardener of the Miami uni medical school.
[...]
"The mechanisms by which soft drinks may affect vascular events are unclear," she admits, opening the door for such possibilities as heavy mock-pop drinkers tending to be unhealthy to begin with – or indeed the usual caveats attached to suspicious statistical work of this type. |

My protein supplement is loaded up with aspartame and artificial sweeteners. Does that cause vascular death too? _________________ Stand With Mittens |

Presumably (the link doesn't specify if it is aspartame, though isn't the other one more common in beverages?). I'd imagine it depends on quantity too. Assuming the connection is even related.
I drink too much of the darned stuff. But I don't care for coffee and usually don't want hot beverages. Water is OK once in a while, but I "hit a wall" on being able to drink it at a certain point. And beer is generally frowned upon in most offices. So I end up with too much soda. _________________ Safety is my gaol.

All this artificial crap.
Just eat and drink with moderation and you don't need this artificial stuff.
And abolish cornsyrup!

Please educate yourself before making such ridiculous calls for action. The only problem with HFCS is the amount of it that we consume. No different than sugar. Table sugar and HFCS contain about the same amounts of fructose and glucose. I've read a lot about this, and even though it's been a year or so since I really looked into the issue, there was almost no evidence to back up all the corn syrup is evil hype.
My only concern with corn syrup is the sheer amount of products that it is used in. I was shocked when I saw it on the list of ingredients for freaking salad dressing. There is no need for sweeteners (sugar or corn syrup) in many of the products it's used in, but food manufacturers know that a nice caloric kick can make people crave their products and keep them coming back for more so they put it in there. |

@ratmonkey,
Corn syrup is as artificial as can be.
Your system doesn't feel sated from it.
So you ingest more calories.
It's a lot cheaper to produce than regular cane or beet sugar and helps reduce the excessive amounts of subsidized corn .
What's wrong with only eating and drinking (in moderation of course) natural foods and drinks?
Or is obesity not a problem anymore?

corn syrup or sugar is only problem if you are drinking an unreasonable amount. The trouble is that some people drink litres of soda a day.
I actually don't get it. If you aren't in the habit, soda is disgusting. I have about 1/2 one in a year. beer, coffee and tea are what I drink. |

But most workplaces don't care for that being consumed during work hours, never mind on the premises. _________________ Safety is my gaol.

these things are all a matter of taste. you just have to be reasonable. if you drink 4 sodas a day, that isn't good. if you drink 6 coffees a day, that isn't good either.
moderation... you then don't need to fill you drink with artificial sweeteners.
there is nothing wrong with tap water. |

Corn syrup is typically used because it is a liquid instead of a solid, so that makes it much easier to mix into your product, especially if it's a liquid or semi-liquid such as salad dressing. Even if sugar is cheaper than corn syrup, the differences in the manufacturing process can make it cheaper to use corn syrup. As was said above: sugar is an ingredient in almost everything we eat.
Just like the new report that bread is our #1 source of Sodium in our diet. That doesn't make bread so bad that we need to avoid it at all costs. We need to filter out the cause of the actual problem, the unhealthy eating habits of so many people.
IMO, diet sodas daily are bad because your body is used to getting x amount of sugars per day in order to get the calories it needs. Eventually your body thinks it needs way more sugar per day in order to hit the required calories, thus you unconsciously crave more food every day. Hence why diet soda works on the short term but is unhealthy in the long term. |
