Minister: 'Sweden needs the American dream'

Quote:
More individualism is the key to finding new talent, suggests Swedish EU-minister Birgitta Ohlsson, who wants to see more of the American dream in Sweden.

"In other European countries it isn't strange to have diversity in a group," said Ohlsson to financial newspaper Veckans Affärer.

Sweden has long had a strong collectivistic tradition, but according to Ohlsson the time has come to exchange this ideal for individualism and facilitated social mobility.

Veckans Affärer held a seminar on how to discover and promote talented individuals in a society earlier this week, and Ohlsson is one of those whom the newspaper previously named a "Swedish super talent".

"I want more of the American dream in Sweden," said the EU-minister.
Birgitta Ohlsson also called for Sweden to modernize its view of the rest of the world, warning that with today's out-of-date view, the country risks losing many future talents.

"Knowledge intensive jobs are moving straight from Sweden to Shanghai as we speak, and that's serious. Besides, the most well-educated teenagers are already there. Our view of the tiger economies is extremely outdated," she said.

Whilst agreeing with Ohlsson's ideas, Green Party head Gustaf Fridolin called for a wider definition of individualism.

"When people are given the tools that individualism provides, they can find solutions together. We can't solve the climate issue on our own, but the parallel between individualism and the desire for one's actions to lead to change is very strong right now," said Fridolin to Veckans Affärer.

I'm sure he does find more for himself, and less for everyone else appealing.

American Dream? What American dream? If it's the one where you completely fuck yourself by thinking you deserve everything, that hasn't worked so well.

Capitalism works. Money has been a subject of elections for quite a while, but Obama seemed to really break new ground (may have set a record?). Romney just might up the ante. At least they still have to dance and go through an endoscopy.

I think you guys don't understand what Sweden is like. Its collectivist to the point of brain damage. Everybody in Stockholm wears same clothes. Everybody has same style. Everybody behaves same way, says same things, has same opinions. Everything according to current trend.

If you don't feel like wearing black tight clothes, pointy shoes and something else is happening in your life you wanna talk about, you are the "weird one" and stigmatized. It's like that scene in Life of Brian where hes telling them that they are all individuals and they are all different, and the crowd chants "yes we are all individuals and we are all different" in unison.

And then you have that guy that goes "Im not." to whom crowd responds "shhhh".

"American Dream" is just a poor choice of words, for the lack of the better one. What she means is that people need the freedom to think for themselves, do whatever they want, make it, become successful, without the mob going "no no no, thats different, who do you think you are".

But... but... I thought Scandinavia was the happiest place in the world ever, according to those happiness measuring indexes.

And yet their infrastructure development is decades ahead of the US, and nobody there lives in want. Threatening that development of and provisioning to the whole for the personal gluttony of the few is naturally rejected.

How the fuck do you know its about gluttony? You spent years living there? Know much about Jantelagen?

Its about of freedom of being different, and being accepted as well. About thinking differently, instead of being bullied in the line. What are you, an offspring of irish peasantry who detests thinking differently because its above their paygrade? Conformism stiffles innovation.

I have close friends living there, and the last I looked around there not 'Everybody in Stockholm wears same clothes. Everybody has same style. Everybody behaves same way, says same things, has same opinions. Everything according to current trend.'

And you can still tell people telling you to shh to bite me. It's not against the law to assert yourself.

And that's different from the US how? Oh yeah you have 'lefties' and 'righties', which is really just a big smokescreen for more of the same. Try chanting 'Fuck the USA' in the midst of a crowd of hypernationalistic retards and see how much more socially acceptable going against the grain is in America.

Bullshit is bullshit, regardless of locale.

Wtf kind of dumbass comment is that?

For someone who claims to be all for individuality you sure do think in weak correlative associations a lot.

Aha so you are irish peasantry :)

So you got stung, looked for my previous posts, cobbled them together to "charge it up" and finally addressed the issue at the end. Your friends eh? Really? Let them translate this http://www.svd.se/kultur/modet-maste-bli-modigare_6809425.svd

Gluttony? Really? Going a bit old testament here, for a guy who claims to be all intellectial you sure are stuck in biblical paradigm. But hey evolution never really happened.

Here is a clue for life: you are not going to get that anywhere. If you are different enough that the main social group sees you as a threat then you are going to be marginalized, get over it. It happens in Sweden, the US, Iran or China, and bitching about how "people look at me weirdly because I'm soooo different!!!!!" will not win you any sympathies.

There hasn't been 'peasantry' in Ireland in over 90 years. And if there's ever been any class which is against thinking differently and change, it's the old guys in neat pressed suits running bigass multinationals who've made every effort to maintain the social hierarchy and impair mobility.

I can read it myself. Selling clothes in Sweden requires adjusting for Swedish culture? Shock, horror. That applies to just about everywhere. How is it not individualistic to prefer native styles you like over one-size-fits-all American smiley-smiley tshirts? You're an individual only if you go all American, is that seriously what you're trying to say?

It's a metaphor for unbridled excessive greed. Don't be dense.

If you choose to believe in that fantasy more power to ya.. But no. Evolution became an accepted theory 153 years ago. Only a scientifically illiterate dipshit would deny it.

Everybody knows you come from a country with a law against blasphemy. Is that a metaphor too? That puts your country on par with the likes of Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, Yemen and Talibani Afghanistan.

That was just a 'My Jebus has a bigger dick than your Jebus' contest that got a little heated.

Well nobody can complain if you refuse to wear Swedish mode :-)

The ten rules state:

Don't think you're anything special.
Don't think you're as good as us.
Don't think you're smarter than us.
Don't convince yourself that you're better than us.
Don't think you know more than us.
Don't think you are more important than us.
Don't think you are good at anything.
Don't laugh at us.
Don't think anyone cares about you.
Don't think you can teach us anything.

11. Don't think that there aren't a few things we know about you.

That's not OTW; that's the droning, auto-hypnotic chakra of the lemming pc brigade echo chamber. It's The Code of the Herd, which begins, "Hapless Beta-Males of the World, Unite!"

Excuse me for trying to do better than yesterday then. I see we should all stay infantile, run to our mommies and suck a tittie. Oh wait, we got feminists to be our surrogate mothers, and tell us what to say, when to say it, what to wear etc etc according to the latest fad on Sex in The City. Kinda like Stockholm.
