Almost there :)
Quote:

/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line63: exec: xterm: not found
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line60: xclock: command not found
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line59: Twm: command not found
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line61: xterm: command not found
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line62: xterm: command not found

Now install them or something else and set up ~/.xinitrc
As an example.
Code:

cat ~/.xinitrc
#!/bin/sh
exec openbox-session

I've a xinitrc file in /etc/X11/xinit
Code:
#!/bin/sh

userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
sysresources=/etc/X11/xinit/Xresources
sysmodmap=/etc/X11/xinit/Xmodmap

# merge in defaults and keymaps

if [ -f $sysresources ]; then

    xrdb -merge $sysresources

if [ -f $sysmodmap ]; then
    xmodmap $sysmodmap
fi

if [ -f "$userresources" ]; then

    xrdb -merge "$userresources"

fi

if [ -f "$usermodmap" ]; then
    xmodmap "$usermodmap"
fi

# start some nice programs

if [ -n "`/etc/X11/chooser.sh`" ]; then
   command="`/etc/X11/chooser.sh`"
else

fi

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ] ; then
   for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/* ; do
      [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
   done
   unset f

Right, and the code in that file is what makes it look for xterm/xclock/twm not found. Install the WM you plan to actually use, and configure your own ~/.xinitrc to launch this WM.

I've installed flubox
Code:
echo "x11-wm/fluxbox -gnome -kde truetype vim-syntax slit toolbar" >> /etc/portage/package.use

Code:
emerge fluxbox xlockmore eterm

Code:
echo "exec startfluxbox" > ~/.xinitrc

nothing changed...

I've mispelled the last command
Code:
echo "exec startfluxbox" > ~/.initrc
modify as
Code:
echo "exec startfluxbox" > ~/.xinitrc
now only as root fluxbox start

it's a per-user config, did you create the same one on your regular non-root user?

~ refers to the current user's home dir. so when root ran 'echo "exec startfluxbox" > ~/.xinitrc' it created that file at /root/.xinitrc

run the same command as your regular user so the file gets created in HIS home dir, then the config will be read when HE runs startx
