hi all,

I'm updating/rebuilding restored system and having problem w/ udev.

Specifically, this message appears on startup:

Quote:
the gentoo linux system initialization scripts have detected that your system does not support UDEV

Additionally the "broken" command ("/etc/init.d/udev broken") outputs "sysfs"

context:
-After the restore, I updated to gentoo-sources-3.1.5
-I have recently merged udev-171-r4
-The emerge process complained that I had CONFIG_IDDE and CONFIG_BLK_DEV_BSG set wrong, so I changed those and recompiled my kernel
-I have successfully 'emerged system"
-I have *not* successfully emerged world: it stops at 159 of 382 or sorts due to various problem (e.g. problem emerging "nss")

Any pointers?

thanks

billmil,

[ ] Enable deprecated sysfs features to support old userspace tools
must be off in your kernel or udev breaks.

fwiw, this is set correctly...(blanked out):

[] Enable deprecated sysfs features to support old userspace too...

.config has these values:

CONFIG_SYSFS=y
#CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED is not set

It seems you've failed to update your system properly, either failed to run etc-update before reboot or failed to update both openrc and baselayout. If I'm looking at the correct tarball, your message comes from baselayout 1, which has been superseded by openrc+baselayout 2 awhile ago.

 Long delayed updates are quite tricky, aren't they ?

VoidMage,

I was hoping to avoid the 'long delayed updates' option and cover the easy one first :)
