seems like I also experienced some kind of issue with sound on the Intel HDA driver when coming back from suspend
only certain stuff seems to work (youtube) - other things not
might be an app/youtube-related issue though

I rather suspect that it's more related to ati-drivers
remembering having had these kind of issues while I still used fglrx
more often when using compositing (compiz-fusion, compiz++, kwin + compositing) and/or adobe-flash & youtube videos or flash animations
which filesystem is it ? ext4 ? btrfs ?
try using xf86-video-ati if it's possible and whether it still happens,
there's however also some slight instability when using compositing and opengl or videos for some longer time
but by far not as much as with ati-drivers

The reason I bought this card is to use it for GPU crunching at the Milkyway@Home project. Hence, I require the ati-drivers. I use ext3 for '/', reiserfs for portage, xfs for distfiles and ext3 for my boinc (milkyway@home) partition.
What would be the difference between 3.0 and 3.1/3.2 that would cause the onset of the crashes? Is there perhaps something in the kernel I can enable/disable to be more stable?
When it crashes it also causes the loss of keyboard and mouse. It doesn't appear to have any affect on anything network related. I can usually ssh in after the crash.
This computer performs only 2 functions. It's an mp3 server and a boinc client. I suppose, when I get home and am able to restart it, I can check access of the mp3 server and see if it's could possibly be related in some way. The mp3 server has a web interface. (gnump3d)

this sounds like some issue with the graphics driver - you by chance have some compositing window manager active ?
I tended to get this with kwin or compiz enabled,
but for me it was a (supposedly) hardlock where even magic sysrq key didn't work
does magic sysrq key work in your situation ?
I haven't tested to ssh in my case so I can't tell for sure if I had the same situation,
try tinkering around with the graphic-driver switches in xorg.conf - that usually helped me to get things a tad more stable but fglrx is still more unstable (e.g. randomly hardlocking with compositing enabled + flash, hardlock with flash or the screen freezing, screen staying black with some driver releases, ...) than the xf86-video-ati driver
so I had enough and switched permanently to the OS driver
there could also be the possibility that when the memory (RAM, cache, etc.) gets very full that the graphics driver doesn't likes this ...

I think it was much simpler than all that. I think the Ram was overheating. I've swapped the card out until I can put some heatsinks on the Ram. When I started crashing even on 3.0 it kind of clued me in. I guess these factory OC'ed 4870's weren't designed to be full blast full time.
