I've been trying to get involved in the AMD64 arch testing lately. One thing I'm wondering about: If an atom is listed in portage and in an overlay one is using, is there a way to tell emerge to use one or the other? Presumably I will want to be testing the packaging from portage.

Yes, you can use "emerge foo::gentoo" to emerge package foo from the portage tree, and "emerge foo::dlinc" to emerge it from the dlinc overlay.

you can also do the same in /etc/portage/package.mask to permanently mask one version - eg to mask the dlinc version of foo so that you only ever build from the portage tree

Code:
echo "package-category/foo::dlinc" >> /etc/portage/package.mask
