I'm trying to install rhythmbox, but lirc keeps failing to build with the following output. I have no idea what's going on. Y'all got any ideas?

Code:

That's pretty simple - your kernel is too recent for this version of lirc.

It did that with lirc 0.9.0, which is the latest version in portage. What should I do?

I doubt it died with the same error, as that header is no longer included in 0.9.0.

You are correct; the error is in a different source file

Here's the error for 0.9.0

Code:

/var/tmp/portage/app-misc/lirc-0.9.0/work/lirc-0.9.0/drivers/lirc_atiusb/lirc_atiusb.c:51:28: error: linux/smp_lock.h: No such file or directory
cc1: warning: unrecognized command line option "-Wno-unused-but-set-variable"
make[5]: *** [/var/tmp/portage/app-misc/lirc-0.9.0/work/lirc-0.9.0/drivers/lirc_atiusb/lirc_atiusb.o] Error 1
make[4]: *** [_module_/var/tmp/portage/app-misc/lirc-0.9.0/work/lirc-0.9.0/drivers/lirc_atiusb] Error 2
make[4]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.39-gentoo-r3'
make[3]: *** [lirc_atiusb.o] Error 2

btw, I omitted the first part of the error in 0.8.7. I have edited above, and the entire error line is as follows
Code:

/var/tmp/portage/app-misc/lirc-0.8.7/work/lirc-0.8.7/drivers/lirc_dev/lirc_dev.c:45:28: error: linux/smp_lock.h: No such file or directory

OK, that's a different matter - that one seems still broken in the git.
Should be bug worthy.
Try disabling the driver (unless you need it).

Damn. Those remotes are why I bailed on macos after lion broke the official driver. I may not need lirc, though. The remotes seem to work fine as a regular input device.

I had LIRC_DEVICES="*" in make.conf. Lirc would just not compile that way - it kept failing on the ati module even when I explicitly left it out. I have gentoo-source 3.1.0. I hope I'll be able to use my Audigy 2 ZS Platinum with the RM-1500 remote it came with.

I don't mind downgrading the kernel if I know which version WILL work.

This blogger resolved the same problem for the nvidia video driver.

Kernel >= 2.6.38 has changed semaphore management functions from acquire_console_sem() and release_console_sem() to console_lock() and console_unlock().

Now, lirc_atiusb.c doesn't seem to even need smp_lock.h AT ALL.
So you can just comment the #include line out.

Also i stumbed upon bug #370287 because I was compiling with LIRC_DEVICES="all" and i2c is not supported anymore.
