Physical and chemical scientist in the US use the metric system for their measurements. The problem comes in when they have to interface with engineers that use the imperial system.

We had to use metric measurements in my chemistry and physics classes back in the early '80s.

(yeah, I know that I am showing my age )

I was using metric in school in the 60's. So who is showing age now, buddy?

So who screwed it up? The major participants were French, Russian, Italian, and Swiss. My intuition says it was the Italians.

That's a lame excuse. Don't believe it.

Did one of them have a parrot on their shoulder when they went into the bar?

Posted: Tue Apr 24, 2012 3:42 am    Post subject: neutrinos appeared to travel faster than the speed of light!

Quote: At just over 186,000m/s, the speed of light (the 'C' in Einstein's E=MC2) plays a fundamental role in nearly every aspect of physics. It's also been a useful device for many a B movie and sci fi novel. Since HG Wells published The Time Machine in 1895, the idea of exceeding the speed of light and entering the realms of time travel, has been one that has consistently captured the public imagination. Revered astrophysicists Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking further piqued the public's fascination with talk of worm holes. And while Sagan remained reserved on the possibility of time travel, significantly he added that he believed it was still worth exploring. Astrophysicists concede that until the speed of light can be exceeded, time travel will remain an impossibility. But in September 2011 researchers working on the Opera experiment at CERN, Geneva, made an announcement that has the potential to turn the very foundation of physics on its head.

we can prepare to travel to stars soon

Careful, it looks like you've slipped back to October 2011 already from all that excessive speed.

http://www.newelectronics.co.uk/electronics-news/opera-reports-anomaly-in-time-flight-of-neutrinos/40481/

this discussion was dated 23 February 2012

Code: Researchers at OPERA have announced that there is an anomaly in the flight time of neutrinos travelling from CERN to Gran Sasso. The team had previously reported that neutrinos appeared to travel faster than the speed of light. In a statement, the researchers identified two possible effects that could have an influence on the timing measurements. If confirmed, one would increase the size of the measured effect, while the other would diminish it. Further tests will be made using a short pulsed beam.

though old news for today if it was true we have hope of visiting stars
i did not notice the date till you mentioned old wswartzendruber
