What is the difference between app-laptop/pommed which I just discovered and old app-laptop/pbbuttonsd I'm using since years? It is about the latest PowerBook G4 which seems to be supported by pommed. As far as I see pommed doesn't do power management?
Regards,

I'd like to add one more:
app-laptop/pommed vs. app-laptop/laptop-mode-tools vs. app-laptop/pbbuttonsd.
There is the brandnew power-management-guide, which applies to ACPI and older APM mobile computers.
Does this guide apply to our ppc laptops too, such as G4 PowerBook which is APM (I guess) or does the pbbuttonsd the job just fine?
Then I'd like to ask if there is any need for USE="apm"? From my installed I think something out of xorg could use it. _________________ HP ZBook Power 15.6" G8 i7-11800H|HP EliteDesk 800G1 i7-4790|HP Compaq Pro 6300 i7-3770 |

i dont think laptop-mode is the same thing as the other 2, laptop-mode is a more generic set of tools to enable a few laptop specific things in order to keep power consumption down ( like readahead settings f.ex.). The other 2 are really more to get some hardware to work properly i think and are platform specific.
Pbbuttonsd and pommed overlay each other and provide more or less the same functionality although i always thought the latter was thought for intel macs.

my powerbook isnt apm but pmu AFAIK, you can enable apm emulation in the kernel.
So yes, in case you are running apm emu some of the tricks can be used i suppose.

it depends on what you have installed and if you are running apm emu. There are really only a few packages in the tree that have an apm USE but probably there are many more that depend on it to function properly. Gnome-power-manager will use apm if detected ( and probably even pmu, didnt check) and uses pm-utils hooks i suppose. I really didnt check how all this works in ppc world.
Cpufreq handling is something that i have been doing for a while by using the ondemand governor, and it works pretty well for me. Dont really get why i should run another daemon when the kernel can do it for me already.
