Uhm... xiph.org got so slashdotted yesterday that they had to take the site down to finish updating all the mirrors... |

I like ogg, but it needs some portable hardware out there.
<vital point> linux compatible </vital point>

For anyone interested I suggest actually listening to the samples. I was surprised, ogg now sounds better then _everything_ else.

The latest Nomad Jukebox was supposed to support it, but now it's not mentioned on the webpages. But if you check Google's cache, the pages used to list Ogg support. |

I heard the new jukebox has a weird non-linux compatible filesystem as well.
In a perfect world all mp3 portables would be picked up as external mountable drives and would have ogg support... maybe some kind of module loading for codecs, compatible with those from winamp and xmms. Now i am dreaming.
On a different note what -q number are people using? |

From what I can understand, the hardware manufacturers were waiting for the spec to be published. Apparantly this is quite normal and was why Ogg delayed the release of 1.0 for a week - so that they could finish the spec.
I think well see a slew of Ogg players really soon. It make a lot of sense for the manufacturer as they pay no royalties for Ogg where as they do for mp3. Also, as people have noted Ogg at -q0 gives amazing quality considering it's average bitrate is 64kbs.
It's also possible to encode Ogg using q -1 and even that sounds pretty good! |

I listened to the samples they had, and it's wierd... the samples (.wav) sound worse thant he OGG (.ogg) format! How in the world they managed that I'm not sure, but the clarity was nice.
So, when is oggenc being updated? =) Or has it already? |

Well if the initial post didn't make it clear:
# emerge -p vorbis-tools
These are the packages that I would merge, in order.
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild U ] media-libs/libogg-1.0 to /
[ebuild U ] media-libs/libvorbis-1.0 to /
[ebuild N ] media-sound/vorbis-tools-1.0-r1 to / |

<vital point> linux compatible </vital point> | Yes it does. Until then, I will not support hardware that without .ogg capability _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

IMO ogg has sounded better for quite some time. At least what I have made into .ogg
doesn't have any issues. Now... onward to start ogging 500 CDs _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Well, Linux & Windows compatible... They have Windows binaries available on the xiph site. MediaXW (or is it WX.. I'm not sure) is working on a plugin codec for Windows, also... to use it with Windows Media Player. THey have them out in .msi format now. ahh.. okay, guess it is Media XW now that I have looked on my bookmarks. http://mediaxw.sourceforge.net |

Hrmm... what does that have to do with hardware support for .ogg? _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Because of the "<vital point></vital point>" tag...
<vital point> linux compatible </vital point>
I wanted to point out that it is more than Linux compatible. That's the only reason for that post. |

The guy who wrote the awesome MAD MP3 decoder named Rob (forgot last name). But he said in an interview somewhere that the reason he hasnt written a new OGG decoder is because the specs werent released. They finally did in 1.0 so now that people ACTUALLY know how OGG works!.. they can get started on portable devices.
OGG uses less cpu than MP3 but more memory. So it sounds like an ideal mp3 player to me. Plus the filesize/quality ratio blows everything else out of the water. |

You know, as quickly as MP3 made it into DVD players and such I wonder if an influx of people starting to use OGG would make them rethink perhaps putting in the OGG codec into the firmware?
Too bad it isn't flash upgradable |

Gotcha... I think what he was getting at, is Hardware support for .ogg. Said hardware also
working with linux stuff. Say portable .ogg player with linux utilities. Thats how I understood
it anyway. I had no problems with .ogg and Windows. I switched to .ogg well over a year
ago while I was still a Windows user :cough: :spit: :choke: _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

I can't wait until the Xiph guys get a good version of their video compression out. I mean if it's better than divx quality, that would rock. Espeically with 6 channel ogg support on the side. Would kickass on a 5.1 system and a tv out!!! |
