The kernel option "enable modesetting on intel by default" causes a black screen during boot. The black screen appears immediately after Grub but before any of the boot-level services (and login) are loaded.

Some details are as such:

lspci
Code:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

Kernel 2.6.39-gentoo-r3
Code:

<*> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)  --->
   < >   AMD Opteron/Athlon64 on-CPU GART support
   <*>   Intel 440LX/BX/GX, I8xx and E7x05 chipset support

<*> Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)  --->
   < >   Intel I810
   <*>   Intel 8xx/9xx/G3x/G4x/HD Graphics
      [*]     Enable modesetting on intel by default

-*- Support for frame buffer devices --->
   [*]   Enable firmware EDID
   [ ]   Framebuffer foreign endianness support  --->
   [*]   Enable Video Mode Handling Helpers
   [*]   Enable Tile Blitting Support
   *** Frame buffer hardware drivers ***
          <none selected here>

-*- VGA text console
   [*]   Enable Scrollback Buffer in System RAM
   (1024)  Scrollback Buffer Size (in KB)
   -*- Framebuffer Console support
   -*-   Map the console to the primary display device
   [ ]   Framebuffer Console Rotation
   [ ] Select compiled-in fonts

Please note that the black screen does not appear if I remove the option for:
Code:
[ ]     Enable modesetting on intel by default

But this option is required for setting X. Any ideas how to deal with this?

Check your syslog and see how far the kernel gets (if it even gets to starting syslog).

Well the kernel goes all the way to the login prompt. I just can't see it. I am able to (blindly) login, and issue a reboot and it works.
I have found that giving i915.modeset=0, or disabling it in the linux kernel altogether is a workaround,
but according to the Gentoo X howto, i need modeset=1 in order to configure X on my machine.

i915.modeset=0 ... working console, but no X. for installing X, modeset=1 is required.
i915.modeset=1 ... required for configuring X, but leads to black screen.

I have searched on the net for this problem. According to http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Intel_GMA I need to build into the kernel fbcon, the i915 and it's corresponding kms. But it is not helping.

okay haha so it is solved :-)

it is a black screen because i can't see anything. but increasing the brightness makes everything visible. thank fully laptops have brightness control buttons on keyboard. for help of others who have similar problems but no brightness keys, you may increase the value through ssh by increasing the value in /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

so now to installing X

OMG, I was banging my head against the wall trying to get it working, and simply increasing the brightness using keyboard (fortunately this works out-of-the-box) solved the problem. Thanks a lot!

Edit to make this Googlable: the system is Lenovo Ideapad Y580 with Intel Ivy Bridge i5 3210M integrated graphics and NVidia GTX 660M discrete graphics with Optimus technology. (the NVidia card isn't involved in this problem at all though)
