[solved] Failures during attempts to connect gdm with X

Hello,
I'm trying to get into Gnome desktop. I've installed xorg-x11, gnome, have done, as I hope, almost everything from the gentoo documentation, but when gdm is trying to connect with x-server, some failure is still comming with notice that xinit can't connect with x-server. Do you have any idea, what to do with this?

I also tried to edit xorg.conf in a few different ways but still with the same final result, so I think the problem lies elsewhere.

1. Yes, the output of the failure is still on this adress, it is not changing randomly.

2. I have Pentium 4 cpu, CFLAGS now on i686, maybe I should choose "native" option. In fact I've compiled kernel twice with building the whole system again, because of some other previous problem, namely with the login failures, but it is another issue.

During first installation, I left CFLAGS march with i686 and Xserver started always without any problem, I'm just not sure if DRI ran well, but this is something, what would be solvable later. During the second installation, I tried to use option march Prescott, in my make.conf, but while I tried then to emerge some packages, there were some failures, so I decided to change it back onto i686, emerge -e system and emerge -auDvN world, also then reconfigured etc configuration files etc. To start the Xserver and GDM, I've tried later, after all of those aboved and any of my next efforts did not help yet..

i686 should always work on recent 32-bit ia32/AMD boxes, are you running 32-bit?

x86-64 instructions in 32-bit land would be illegal and would trigger this, but changing it back to i686 (or having no -march at all) and emerge -e world should fix it. I don't think -e system is enough. You might want to delete -march xxx or change it to native, and as a minimum change, rebuild:

x11-base/xorg-server
x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati
x11-libs/libXfont (since it's listed in the backtrace, this one is most suspect)

and see what it does. -e system should have fixed up glibc, etc. so that should be fine...

I think it is 32-bit cpu, not 64-bit, I suppose it is this one:

Emerge -e world failed with the shut down of pc, probably because of the overheated cpu, after such long time of recompiling. About 2 hundreds of packages left. Anyway, the problem with starting X-server has been solved, but both the keyboard and the mouse doesn't work. Probably another issue.

make sure you re-emerge xf86-input-mouse and xf86-input-keyboard (and/or xf86-input-evdev) when you upgrade xorg-server.

And what am I thinking... The old Pentium4 (Willamette and Northwood) do not have PNI (Prescott New Instructions) so -m prescott definitely won't be very good for these P4's...

I've reinstalled system with option native in my make.conf, installed xorg-drivers, xf86-input-evdev and both mouse and keyboard works fine. I'm closing this issue. About some other problems will start a new one.
