After 6 years of running a ~amd64 sytem I was tired of the frequent breakage. But I really like having the latest stuff. So when getting a new machine why not dump this awful beast and try, say fedora. It was much easier to get started, but the package manager wasn't working. No problem thought I, I'll just post a question on the Fedora forum. But it wouldn't let me post for a day, and I was in a hurry. And then I read that I should expect to completely re-install Fedora every 6 months. No update process that was likely to work!!! So tail between my legs, I'm back here. I wanted to simplify my use flags, and cut out stuff in the kernel that really wasn't needed.
Long story short, I had many problems. But now that it's all working I know that although there are hiccups from time to time, I do know how (mostly) to deal with them. But mainly, I'm in love with these forums. People are knowledgeable, very helpful, and polite. I love you guys. In particular let me mention:
msalerno (xfce)
NeddySeagoon (grub)
Veldrin & DONAHUE (Driver for sata dvd) (also see http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-756626.html#6756626 Help way beyond what can be expected.)
albright (resolv.conf)
Watchman (apache2_modules in make.conf)
ingenious (glibc patch)
avx (dovecot problem)
If any of you seeing this feel as I do, you might want to go here: http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/stores.xml and then click on the make a donation link near the upper right.
