There is an rpm linux client that you need to download from real. Stick that in /usr/portage/distfiles and then emerge realplayer. |

Hmmm it seems you can only get the crappy RealPlayerOne and in exe format. If nothing else perhaps someone can host the rpm. I still have it. Would be a shame if Real just stopped offering it. Hopefully I'm just being dumb and can't find it for some reason. |

Meh out of curiosity I tried to download it and it says that it's not available at this time.
Wonder how real feels about us sharing the RPM. Anyone know about this? |

Yes their service sucks and RealOnePlayer was one of the most annoying applications for windows I have ever seen. Every hour on the hour it would pop itself up reminding me that it wasn't the default apps for mp3s.
But how else are you going to play rm/ram files?
The ebuild script calls cpio on the rpm to get the files out. Portage itself does what the ebuilds tell it to, and the ebuilds can pretty much do anything you can do from the command-line. |

You could always do an emerge rmxmms and flip Real the bird... _________________ I can't drive 55. |

u can get the linux version of real player here:
http://forms.real.com/real/player/unix/unix.html
The last time I installed it, I used either Linux 2.x(libc i386). I would suggest using the bin file instead of rpm. I've had a small problem with the rpm. bin file works perfectly.
Cheers,

rmxmms is pretty cool, but you still need Realplayer8, and in addition you need the RealMedia SDK, So it really does not save you any work: just from having to deal with the RealPlayer UI.
On a side note I think RealPlayer8 for Linux is great. For me it has always been very stable and easy to deal with. RealOne is a downgrade IMHO though :(. They ditched one of the nicest features of RealPlayer Linux.. those handy seek buttons on the left and right side, and replaced them with.... with.... uhm..... nothing ;p |

so do you follow the instructions from real player to install the .bin. or do you put it into the distfiles diretory and run emerge realplayer?
or will emerge be looking for the rpm not the bin |

As your user run:
Code: | /opt/RealPlayer8/realplay |
and go through the local configuation. Then run
Code: | /opt/RealPlayer8/realplay |
agian to launch realplayer. |

Looks like rpm worked fine for you. In any case, if u had to use the bin file for some reason, u could just follow the instructions on the real player site. Basically, run the bin file using sh <file.bin>, and follow the installation(You might need to chmod +x the bin file before u can do the above).

yes it gave instructions for chmod like you suggested. i just ran the .bin in /opt/RealPlayer8 (after installing using the rpm) and then once it ran its lil firstrun script i was able to launch the player from konsole with the realplay command.
works great too. got to love gentoo and linux |

From what I understand, realplayer sends a lot of information to real networks every time you view a file. In windows, I use zone alarm to stop this... Is there any options in linux? Or does the linux version even send out any info?

In Windows you can disable all that crap, but they make it tricky to find. Realplayer 8 in linux does not appear to be stealthing usage info as far as my firewall/router indicates ;). |

So, where would one pick up this RealMedia SDK. emerge suggest looking on real.com. However this is a convoluted site and things are hard to find. Any clues?
Thanks,

Lately it seems like Portage does not like me. I have the latest of everything. Gentoo 1.4 latest Portage, blah.
I copied the realplayer rpm to the proper dir, no joy.
Gkrellm plugins not all work for me.
Opera installed but never found anything that would allow it to run.
I know how we all love Gentoo, but is this a normal occurence? To avaoid dependency hell, have I fallen into "workaround" hell?
I hope not, as besides this Gentoo is adictive, I'm just not knowledgable yet to fix things by myself yet.
Thanks for the hell...Freudian slip..help.
PS Keep the "troll" remarkes to yourself, I'm serious. I just want to know how to fix when things like this happen. |

Ok, the ebuild for this seems to be bad... maybe the rpm changed or something..? not sure. I've never written an ebuild before but I'm going to try and update this one, so if I can get it to work, I'll report back. _________________ Excellent.. |
