Vega Strike 0.4.1 is ready for consumption!
This is a massive update and Vega Strike is one of the best open source games available. A great game engine - the graphics are mind blowing - with great media content - some of the models are exceptional - and a huge dynamic universe - 100s of 1000s of star systems - make for a very deep and enjoyable game.
It's like Privateer done right. Just check out those bootylicious screenshots.
[img:bca542632e]http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/albums/vs_screenshots/vs_screen1.highlight.jpg[/img:bca542632e]
For all those Star Trek fans, there's even the Vega Trek mod for Vega Strike.
[img:bca542632e]http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/albums/vegatrek/vegatrek002.highlight.jpg[/img:bca542632e]
For Wing Commander fans, there's the Wing Commander: Universe mod which is in steady development.
[img:bca542632e]http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/albums/vegastrike_mod/VSsweetCenturion6.highlight.png[/img:bca542632e]
And there's even a Babylon 5 mod which has some great models despite being a heavy WIP.
This is a brilliant example of how OS games can be done. Check it out. I look forward to it being in portage! _________________ Want Free games?

installing and getting into that has been on my todo list for ages, I tested it a while ago and it looked very interesting, but I haven't had time to play it :/.
for those of you with time, I'd highly recomend testing it though |

Relevant bugzilla link.
There should be an ebuild up there shortly. _________________ Want Free games?

*bump*
I can't believe this doesn't interest more people. Everybody seems so wrapped up in empty-my-wallet games. _________________ Want Free games?

I can't speak for everybody else, but I'm waiting for the new version to hit portage before I comment, I never played 0.3.1, and I'm not about to download and compile 98MB of stuff when there's another version on the verge of entering portage... I'll give it a thorogh run through as soon as I get it though, it looks quite nice from looking at the screenshots on the site. _________________ A smoking section in a restaurant is like a urinating section in a swimming pool. |

Similar to Liff, I too am waiting for it to hit portage. Hmm maybe I ought to get off my lazy *ss and write an ebuild for it. _________________ Jeff Stuart

I was going to, but my home pc is now offline due to bunny-wire incompatabilities. (Bunny as in bunny rabbit.) _________________ Want Free games?

Hi charlieg,
Vegastrike looks awesome.
What is this game about (i only get a connection refused error trying to get the manual)??
Is it a multiplayer game or can you run it in single player modus with a storyline, plot, ...??
If it´s a multiplayer game over the internet, do you have to pay for playing??
I´m going to try it out, when i´m at home!
Thx for answers

It's a single player game. You basically go around a massive dynamic universe trading, doing mercenary missions, blowing things up, etc.
I'm not overly sure that there's a story line. It's engrossing, none-the-less.
(Besides, who really played Privateer for the storyline - it kinda sucked!) _________________ Want Free games?

I am waiting patiently for an ebuild for Vega Strike 0.4.1, because I REALLY want to play it on my gentoo system without having to wade through the compilation stuff.
I've been playing on my Windows partition, and it's a complete blast. This is probably going to be THE open source game. I've done a fair bit of art for it, actually... and it's starting to look and play like a commercial game. |

Version 0.3 is already great, can't wait to play 0.4.1, but the compile script doesn't work (as usual). ebuild plz....
btw, has any of you try parsec? It is the best looking open source space simulation game currently available on gentoo (haven't try vs 4.1 yet), but the project appears to be dead now. What a shame... |

Parsec is not dead - it recently got released under the GPL as OpenParsec. However, I do think that Vega Strike looks better than Parsec - which looked good in 2001 but is getting a little dated now.
PeteyG - nice to see you up and running in Gentoo. I wonder when we'll be seeing a Vega Trek ebuild? Hint, hint.
I will try and get a Vega Strike ebuild together but my Gentoo pc is offline - bunnies and wires don't mix! No adsl for me at the moment. _________________ Want Free games?

With the recently announced Half-Life 2 delay, I'm itching for a new game to futz around with, and since I have been wholly unsuccessful getting my games to work with Wine, I've been looking for a solid native-Linux game to occupy my time. This could be it. Looking forward to the ebuild! |

Just played 0.3, and were pretty impressed. I don't know if I made some wrong adjustments, but the mouse-movement seemed chunky, while the keyboard was quite fast and responsive. I haven't played it much though, and I am looking forward to even better graphics in 0.4.1. _________________ Former Official Danish Gentoo Translation Team |

Made a small adjustment to it where autoconf is called. Works in a bash environment.

Thanks for the ebuild! Now to see what this bad boy is all about. Of course, the compilation process will take a good long time.
Edit: Whoops...the ebuild failed with the following error:
Code: | >>> Install vegastrike-0.4.1 into /var/tmp/portage/vegastrike-0.4.1/image/ category games-rpg
doman: *.1 does not exist.
mv: cannot move `data' to `/var/tmp/portage/vegastrike-0.4.1/image//usr/local/share/vegastrike': No such file or directory
!!! ERROR: games-rpg/vegastrike-0.4.1 failed.
!!! Function src_install, Line 87, Exitcode 1
!!! (no error message) |

Argh, sorry about that. The ebuild has been fixed.
That's what happens when you make last minute changes and forget to test them... X_X |

I've edited my first posted and corrected the ebuild, so just use that (it also includes the correction made by garf0134). |
