Hi just a quick question - will installing from the boot-cd with the pre-compiled -iso of 100mb have negative effects on the system performance, compared to the 16mb pure source .iso

thanks

and greetings

It shouldn't... that pre-compiled one is optimized for i686. It won't run on anything lower than a Pentium II (or is it Pro?) or Duron/Athlon.

It's possible you could squeeze a bit more performance out of the pure source ISO with one of the newest processors (Athlon XP, Pentium 4) but I'm not sure.

Pentium Pro is already i686

And you should get (but only a very little) more performance from the 16MB ISO but pls don't use P4 with gcc 3.1 since P4 optimizations are b0rked, use gcc 3.1.1 (read: wait for the 1.3c tarballs if you want to use gcc 3.x)

Ah, thanks for the advice! I doubt I'll have a P4 at home any time soon, but I do have one at work. It's got Red Hat on it right now, but that could change... :)
