I recently changed from Gnome to the XFCE desktop. A few days ago I ran "emerge --sync" followed by "emerge -uD world". Since then, every time I start the desktop, the XFCE desktop loads, but then the Gentoo branded desktop that I used with Gnome appears for 1 second after which the XFCE desktop returns. It also happens when I logout of the desktop. I don't use a graphical login manager, but start the desktop session using the "startx" command. I have unmerged the Gnome desktop.

Which config file could be responsible for this behaviour?

Thanks.

Maybe it is something executed by the startx that is setting the root background before xfce loads. It could be some hidden file in your $HOME that gets executed (and is a remnant of what gnome set while it was around).

Applications Menu --> Settings --> Session and Startup --> Launch GNOME services on startup

Thanks for the suggestion, but I haven't got that box selected.

If you run XFCE with a command startxfce4 then do you have the trouble?

Yes, same thing happens.

I created another user account and logged in with that and the problem doesn't occur. I also tried the root account and that too does not have the problem, so it looks as though it is something within the profile of my user account.

My home directory contains three sub-directories that I think are Gnome related: .gconf, .gconfd and .gnome2. I've renamed them but they are recreated each time I start XFCE. I'm running one Gnome app: Gnome-terminal. [x11-terms/terminal caused X to run at 40% CPU!] Nautilus is installed, but it's been pulled in by gnome-disk-utility, which has been pulled in by gvfs, which has been pulled in by libgnome, nautilus and thunar! Any suggestions as to how I can clear out the Gnome stuff would be appreciated.

My advice kill, remove, uninstall, terminate gvfs and nautilus. And gnome-disk-utility too. It may need edit ebuilds. For automounting devices you can use udev.

Found the problem. I still had the profile set to "default/linux/x86/10.0/desktop/gnome". Once I amended this to "default/linux/x86/10.0/desktop" I was able to remove the Gnome stuff and the Gnome desktop does not appear any more.
