I just installed Savage using the in-tree ebuild, and it segfaults when trying to load:
| Code: | $ savage
System_Init()
Segmentation fault |
This is a fresh install with no existing preferences, etc. The first time I tried to run it it informed me that it's setting up some an initial config, which does exist, but the game still segfaults immediately everytime I try to run it.
Anyone else have this problem? I know it's an older game, but if anyone has it installed, can you try renaming your ~/.savage directory and running it?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. _________________ http://www.legroom.net/ |

Thanks for the reply, Hyper_Eye. I ended up finding a solution to my problem, but forgot to post back here. Several older games have a problem where the length of the GL_EXTENSIONS string returned by modern video drivers/cards exceeds the maximum size expected, and rather than try to deal with the problem these games just crash. Savage is the third such game that I've found like this, though the way it was crashing (without any useful info whatsover) threw me off.
I filed a bug 369135 about the problem, along with a workaround. Details of the workaround are discussed in bug 326837.
As for switching over to XR, I did check that out while browsing for info about this, but figured I'd stick with the version available in the tree. Hopefully, once a 'stable' version of XR is released some kind sole will adapt the ebuild to use it rather than the vanilla savage package. _________________ http://www.legroom.net/ |

I'm not sure how ebuilds typically handle games with auto-updaters like XR has. It is well worth playing XR though. I would certainly consider it to be at least as stable as SFE. Anyway, I will check out that bug. Thanks for that useful info. _________________ Gentoo Gaming Videos |
