|

After upgrade to Skype 2.2, I am seeing a lot of instability. Seems to crash after just a few seconds of running. Symptoms seem identical to those identified in this thread:

Anyone else seeing this? |

Seems to be running fine here (amd64 with -qt-static USE). In fact, I didn't realise that it got updated. _________________ emerge --quiet redefined | E17 vids: I, II |

| Doesn't work here either, it doesn't even connect. Went back to 2.1. |

Me too on x86 with --static-qt.
Have to restart it several times until it stays, but then it runs well. |

| No problems here on amd64 with USE=qt-static. However, I have not installed pulseaudio which is the usual suspect for crashes. |

Here it's run fine, but my contacts don't hear me.
But it's not the place to ask for it. _________________ Save the penguins, burn the flags! |

nah. it's badly broken here for me on amd64 (never have used pulseaudio, nor will i ever!)
Funny enough, if I start it under gdb, it actually stays running long enough to close the 'file transfers' dialog. If I close the file transfers dialog, it doesnt immediately crash on startup.
Of course, it always ends up crashing later for one reason or another. It's just flatly unstable here for me, and a royal PITA to debug.
Downgraded to 2.1, all is fine. _________________ Lost configuring your system?

I do not know, how and why -- but the problem is gone!
Still using skype 2.2.0.25 is runs stable and well now using the same hardware and environment.
I guess, any dependency was updated on my system in the meantime. Or perhaps an error of the skype network was fixed? |

| Hm. Using skype 2.2.0.25 without qt-static and everything runs fine (amd64). In fact I had to switch to this version because 2.1.0.81 was crashing after every call. No Pulse Audio. |

Um, not wanting to hijack the thread, but At Some Time In The Past it was suggested/recommended to install PulseAudio.
Has the pendulum swung the other way now?
Do I just uninstall it?
[my problem is that I upgraded from a Logitech E 3500 quickcam to a Logitech C270 Webcam, and now Skype does not detect the mic / voice. However the Mic does work fine in, for example, Audacity, or on a Windoze box. Video works fine.]
So eliminating possiblities ... Skype is 2.2.0.25 an AMD 64. _________________ Asus M3A78 64, X2 6000+, PX9800 GT, 4GB Ram | Asus M4A77TD PRO, X2 245, HD4350, 4GB RAM |

| After month or so running skype-2.2, on amd64, no pulseaudio, -qt-statics, it started crashing on two of the three machines. Went back to 2.1, and am watching my laptop which still has 2.2 running OK |

| Same problem here: both versions of 2.2, amd64, no pulse, almost instant crashes. Masked and falled back to 2.1. |

I tried upgrading to Skype 2.2 last night.
I had instant crashes until I moved my old ~/.Skype directory (deleting shared.xml and <username>/config.xml) was not sufficient).
I am enjoying the enhanced audio quality.
My setup: amd64, +qt-static, no PulseAudio _________________ If you don't have backups, you deserve to lose your data -- read about my simple backup scheme. |

Skype often starts and even connects, then crashes after a few seconds. I wondered whether this was related to my mixer settings, since it seemed for a time that Skype would actually start if I unmuted my microphone; maybe it checks audio input and output devices when it starts. It seems unlikely, though, I must admit. _________________ My Gentoo computers:

I spoke to soon -- after I moved my laptop between networks Skype started crashing. If I have to delete ~/.Skype every time I move a network that's rather onerous -- back to Skype-2.1.0.47 for me (2.1.0.81 has garbled mic pickup). _________________ If you don't have backups, you deserve to lose your data -- read about my simple backup scheme. |

Based on signature - you are with the same laptop as I am, and I never hand garbled mic pickup, 2.1.0.81 works just fine for me |

Yeah, I never cracked the problem -- it's only that version. Mic pickup in 2.1.0.47 is okay, and sounds great in 2.2.0.25 (when not crashing). _________________ If you don't have backups, you deserve to lose your data -- read about my simple backup scheme. |

| Skype 2.2 for linux crashes for various and absurd reasons. For example, it used to crash a few seconds after signing in for me, until I manually created the ~/.Skype/Logs directory - and that fixed it! I also read about a solution in which one of the files in the sound directory of skype was deleted, and several people reported that fixed their crashes... |
