I don't think I could have said it much better myself moderator. It's just sad to see everyone flaming
but no one helping. Chromium group has the right to write the source code any way they see fit... I just
don't like things crammed down my throat. Not many other packages restrict security this way without at
least providing a optional variable to change. In fact the 100's of packages I have installed on my system
I can only of think of 2 that do this but offer a bypass. I have no disagreements with the security aspect
of NOT running as root. Just the fact there is absolutely no need to run it as root. Thats like saying I know
everything, I know all possibilities, that just seems arrogant to me... but that's my opinion.
but then your infected computer will infect another 100-1000, which will infect another 100-1000 and soon the sun will explode and the horses will start eating eachother

Simply modify the /etc/chromium-browser/default file with gedit or leafpad or another pure text file editor to add this flag to the chromium flags:
--user-data-dir
And voilá, chromium starts in a root profile!

No you don't. There is absolutely no need to run any GUI application as root, no exceptions, period. We can help you to set up your computer properly. Please tell what exactly is the problem.

In OP's defense... I don't believe there is any NEEEEED to have chrome or any other GUI application running as root. BUT, sometimes its way more comfortable.
Perhaps most of you believe that vi is the best editor ever, but some of us have never had the time/desire to learn all those magic formulae and we stick to something as simple as kwrite. Perhaps most of you know all those xvjfpqdmletsdance commands for tar, but talking for myself, I don't use that daily, and for this simple reason I cannot memorize. Having a konqueror session open allow me to select, right-click, and voilá, a .tar.gz, or tar.bz or whatever created. So no one NEEDS to use GUI, its just that sometimes we don't care.

I've hit this thread because I'm installing gentoo on a new machine and I have root only and I was surprised by this blockage. Not a big deal.
