I did a minimal install of gentoo the other day and since have been attempting to get xorg up and running. I have spent a good deal of time hunting around on the discussion forums and the docs and have found a plethora of advice that doesn't seem to work. I am at this point farther than I have gotten so I figured I would someone might have run in to this before.

After running the autoconfig on X. I attempted running X with he configuration autogenerated in root. It begins to load. pulls up a nice nvidia logo and than crashes. From there I can do nothing other than reboot. So I'm hesitant to continue guessing and testing until I have an idea about what to do.

I have a sony laptop with a core i3, and an Nvidia 310 graphics card. I did a minimal install of gentoo.
the most recent kernel config I have:

turned of frame buffers
turned on the nouveau staging drivers
the card switching setting for laptops is on but I'm not sure I can make use of it, b/c there doesn't appear to be a default card on the board
MTRR is on
loadable module support is on

Since the install of gentoo the only packages I have emerged are

nvidia-drivers <----- This was before I was informed that they would not work with my card, I'm going to unmerge them but I was going to wait until I had X working, unless somone knows a reason I should uninstall them now

xorg-server

current use flags are "kde hal -gnome -qt4 gdk" <-- There are some others but those are the only relevant ones.

Thanks

If you get the Nvidia Logo, that's the binary driver. I only know from ATI, that you cannot have both drivers (the nouveau and the nvidia-drivers).

two options:
1. rebuild the kernel and remove nouveau), then reinstall nvidia-drivers via portage (sorry, you mentioned the driver doesn't work with your card)
2 leave the kernel and remove nvidia-drivers via portage

Is hald started?
Code:
# /etc/init.d/hald start
# rc-update add hald default

To get a full desktop, choose one of the desktop profiles:
Code:
# eselect profiles list

Why would nvidia-drivers not work with you card? They support everything down to and including Geforce 6. It's Geforce 5 FX and older that need legacy versions of nvidia-drivers.

You have to choose what you want to use - nvidia-drivers or nouveau. If it's nvidia-drivers, then build a kernel without nouveau and create a simple xorg.conf containing only this:
Code:
Section "Device"
  Identifier "nvidia card"
  Driver "nvidia"
EndSection.

If instead you want to use nouveau, you don't need *any* xorg.conf. What 'Xorg -configure created is outdated, remove it. Oh, and you don't need HAL, X doesn't use it anymore.

Whatever you choose, and if it doesn't work, use pastebin to post Xorg.0.log

That explains a lot. Currently hal isn't even installed yet X doesn't seem to have any trouble finding my mouse.
Alright. I will try this out and let you know what happens.
thanks

I pulled out nouvue, and attempted to load x using a config file with nothing other then the recommended devices section.

The exact same thing happened. The Nvidia logo comes up, it appears to try to switch resolutions or something, and crashes. no error messages, just a blank screen that I can't kill or switch to another pty.

At this point it appears that I need to do one of the two things"

Put nouvue back in, remove the nvidia-drivers, specify the device in my xorg-conf as ???? and HOPE it works.

Or firgure out whether these nvidea drivers will actually work. This is obviously what I would prefer to do.

Ok, this is kind of a newbie question. Assuming the Nvidia drivers SHOULD work on my card. Should I be re-emerging xorg-server, or nvidia-drivers after recompiling the kernel?

Any other ideas?

run
Code:
nvidia-xconfig
X -retro
If you get a black white stipple screen with a moveable mouse cursor X is working and the problem involves display manager/window manager/desktop
If no stipple screen:
Code:
emerge wgetpaste
awk '/Graphics support/,/CONFIG_SOUND/' /usr/src/linux/.config | wgetpaste
emerge --info | wgetpaste
lspci -k | wgetpaste
Post the url's returned.

yes
Code:
emerge -pv xorg-server $(qlist -IC x11-drivers)

Don't run nvidia-xconfig. Like Xorg -configure, the config it crates is outdated. The Device section is all you need. Though, since the nvidia logo appears, I too suspect the error is in the WM or in whatever you're trying to run in X. Just out of curiosity, what are you trying to run in X? And how do you start it, ~/.xinitrc or XSESSION variable or?

I haven't installed a WM, but I plan on installing KDE.

As for progress made so far:
I re-emerged xorg-server, and nvidia-drivers.
I ran nvidia-xconfig followed by X -retro

I get a slightly less awesome nvidia logo, followed by a stipple screen and a working mouse. So I guess it works. Two questions.
1. I know the keyboard was working because I had to ctrl-alt-delete to get out of that screen. I was unable to get any other key sequence or mouse click to do anything. Is this normal without a WM installed or is something else screwed up?

2. It still does the same thing without the retro. I'm a little confused about where to go from here. Is it correct to assume that both of these problems are because I haven't installed a window manager?

also, can someone tell me the command line I need to put in to xorg.conf to get ctrl-alt-bksp to work?

Thanks

The InputDevice sections do nothing unless you install the old keyboard and mouse drivers (as opposed to the recommended evdev driver which uses udev) and put another option on xorg.conf, which nvidia-xconfig doesn't. The ServerLayout section I don't think it hurts, but it very well could. Same for any other section nvidia-xconfig puts in there, they probably don't interfere but at the same time they could be a point of failure.

Very, very likely. You can't expect X to show something, when nothing is installed. Install a lightweight WM (openbox is a good choice, or go with fluxbox because it has an integrated panel) and xterm or something.

This should do it:
Code:
Section "InputClass"
   Identifier   "keyboard"
   MatchIsKeyboard   "on"
   MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
   Driver      "evdev"
   Option      "XkbOptions"      "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"
EndSection

So I threw open box on. It turns out that was at least part of the problem. Well, sort of.
Now, when I launch X It loads open box and seems to function correctly.
The problem is when I exit, it crashes like it did before. (ctrl-alt-bksp, and the menu logout have the same effect)

Also, I cannot switch pty's. When I try I get svga blank screens.

It seems like loading X causes all the pty's to switch to this resolution.

Any ideas?

What exactly do you mean by "it crashes"?

As for the consoles... Text console of framebuffer console? If framebuffer, which driver? vesafb and uvesafb are ok, everything else is *not*. Pastebin your kernel config, that'll be simplest. And your grub config.

It doesn't switch out of the video mode and is unresponsive to any key command including ctrl-alt-delete. A hard reboot is necessary. This is similar to what it was doing when I ran X before installing openbox. Obviously the problem has something to do with X server refusing to back out of that video mode. The question is why?

I don't know how obvious that is.

You didn't answer what kind of console you use and you didn't provide the configs I asked for. Please post that info, otherwise this is just a guessing game that is unlikely to provide results.

I apologize, I'm a little new to gentoo. and this pastebin command. Which config do you want?

I am using Nvidia drivers and attempting to run openbox.
The reason I do not think it is a problem with the WM is in a way the behavior is similer to before I even had openbox installed.

Before, I would run startX, and after video modes were switched and the Nvidia logo was displayed I would get a blank screen which allowed no keyboard or mouse input.
Now that I have openbox installed, When I start X, it loads openbox and openbox appears to be fully functional. I haven't installed any programs, but everything looks right. When I exit however, it drops back to this blank screen which appears to be in the same video mode X was running in. Also, when I'm in X, and I try using ctrl_alt_F(i) to switch to different pty's it switches to that same blank screen.

So, like I said. from a noob point of view what appears to be happening is Xorg doesn't seem to know when to unload the nvidia drivers.
is it possible I have an entry missing in my xorg.conf that specify's behavior on exit?

I'll attempt to figure out pastebin in a few minutes.

Here it is, a year and a half later. I decided to give Gentoo a try again. I'm basically stuck in the same place. X loads, Black screen, No nvidia logo , no keyboard/mouse response, no errors.

Please, please use pastebin! Posting logs and config files directly makes the thread unreadable. The kernel config in incomplete even. So yeah, pastebin!

That said...
Code:
[ 10842.623] Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.
Yeah...

Quoting myself:
Quote:
You can't expect X to show something, when nothing is installed. Install a lightweight WM (openbox is a good choice, or go with fluxbox because it has an integrated panel) and xterm or something.

Also, I have tried two windows managers now. Gentoo's xorg setup recommended installing twm and xterm. No difference in behavior
Then I tried openbox. No change in behavior.

by the way A lot of other sites have recommended trying "X -retro" What I have heard more than once is that if I get a black and white checkered screen with a mouse Xorg works and the wm doesn't

If that is the case my problem may be with Xorg, bc I get the exact same thing. Black screen. No error messages.

Ok, you've learned how to use pastebin - now please edit the overly long post, removing the incomplete kernel config from it.

Now onto further stuff: Why do you have the Intel KMS driver in the kernel? Is this an Optimus laptop? If it is, of course you won't be able to start X on the Nvidia card. If it is Optimus: remove xorg.conf, add "intel" to VIDEO_CARDS and reinstall xorg-drivers. Then learn about bumblebee.

Also, it seems this is a different laptop from the one you started the thread with, don't you think that would be important info to mention?
