At least, I think it's a permissions problem.

I've downloaded the 1.3.1302 Linux binary from ID (ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/doom3/linux/old), because this is the highest version for which doom3cc (http://gamescc.rbkdesign.com/) will work.

When I install the mod, it loads and I can see the sound location radar, but no captions appear. Whenever I switch on captions in game options, they revert back to "no". This is why I think it's a permissions problem.

I know the mod works because when I Wine the same version with the same mod, it works (although there are shader problems with the radar, which shows up as solid white instead of translucent).

I've changed the group of the mod dir to games and even made my regular user the owner. I've set permissions to 777. None of this helped. Yet... it just seems like a permissions problem, somehow. I know that a savedgames dir should appear in the mod dir after playing, which doesn't appear.

Anyone have any advice?

Does anything appear at the linux console at runtime (run it in a terminal)?

Not too familiar with doom 3, but does it have its own log file that might show errors?

I looked up the website, and one news post mentions they have yet to port the mod to linux, but it's a rather old message. But, no further message says it's been ported successfully. Are you sure it should run properly in the linux version?

That's a good point. I haven't thought of that.

They have released the source code. I was thinking of taking a look at it later and seeing if I can compile it for the latest D3 binary on Linux, since the last D3 update made the mod stop working. It may be more than a month from now before I can take a look, though.

I think BradN is correct and that the mod doesn't work on Linux. I may take this on as a project. I've also noticed a couple of spots where captions are missing or misspelled.
