(SOLVED)-cant emerge sandbox 2.5

fresh install of gentoo, just upgraded GCC as per the guide and when i go to go emerge - system i get

nope - even does the same on sandbox-2.4 after updating glibc gcc and libtool

looks to me that that could be an issue, why is it setting that when the host is different on x64?

Configuring sandbox for ABI=x86...

also seems strange for a x64 system

app-arch/xz-utils is installed here too

I am having the same trouble with sandbox-2.4. I un-emerged it with the intention of reinstalling and cannot now do so. Sandbox then prevents a whole lot of other things from emerging.

Exactly the same error here on two very different machines (but both 64-bit multilib with IA32_EMULATION turned on). Here's some output from one of them (the other one is completely parallel):

BTW, I don't know if this is relevant, but I get the same "configure: error: cannot run C compiled programs" error when trying to build grub-0.97-r10, but there's no "*.xz: file format not recognized. Ignoring" first.

Going through the config log in my last post, I've found that "x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -m32" generates a binary which is not recognized. Dark Foo appears to have the same problem.
e.g:

$ x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -m32 -o hello hello.c
$ ./hello
-bash: ./hello: No such file or directory
$ ls -go hello
-rwxr-xr-x 1 6819 Mar 10 10:52 hello
$ file hello
hello: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.9, not stripped
$ ldd hello
not a dynamic executable

So - something has got broken recently in my ability to build and run 32-bit executables. What do I need to rebuild or update? Many emerges are failing because sandbox will not build. I cannot build gcc for the same reason - it gets as far as
"Running configure in multilib subdirs 32" and fails "cannot run C compiled programs"

Hi all,

I have the same problem here as well. Also unmerged sandbox with the hope that I can rebuild it afterwards, so now it is even more broken.
I had crossdev installed previously, and removed it, but did not help. If anyone knows how to solve this problem, please post - I cannot continue my update at the moment.

OK - this seems to be the same problem as this post:

I have done this:
# cd /lib
# ln -s ../lib32/ld-linux.so.2 .

Now my 32-bit binaries run OK and sandbox builds.

It is not clear whether this link is in the "correct" place (the post mentioned put the link in /lib64 which did not work for me) or why it failed, but the post mentioned suggests that updating glibc should have installed the link - is this a bug?

Does this solve your trouble Dark Foo?

I think we're getting close. /lib(|32|64)/ld-linux.so is normally owned by sys-libs/glibc, but after upgrading to sys-libs/glibc-2.11.3 yesterday, only the one in /lib32 is present:

edit: yes its working here now, still get the error msg about unknown format, but sandbox compiled fine

Please check if your /lib is a symlink to /lib64.
If it is not (like in my fresh install)
mv /lib/* /lib64
rmdir /lib
ln -s /lib64 /lib
