one of my favorite slogans which I came up with and are available on the LiveDVD are:

  • http://77.110.8.68/gentoo10-wallpapers/gentoo10-20.jpg - Make Gentoo Not War
  • http://77.110.8.68/gentoo10-wallpapers/gentoo10-22.jpg - This ain't yo Daddy's OS
  • http://77.110.8.68/gentoo10-wallpapers/gentoo10-24.jpg - What is Linux without Control?
  • http://77.110.8.68/gentoo10-wallpapers/gentoo10-27.jpg - Forget the Force, We've Got the Source!

P.S You can find these and the rest of the wallpapers on the LiveDVD inside /home/gentoo/.wallpapers

I still haven't heard anyone who has found the easter eggs on LiveDVD :D

Anybody make a lightscribe label for this baby yet? I tried to do it myself, but I have zero artistic talent...results were nasty.

EDIT: Nevermind...it's right in the DVD...awesome! Great job with the entire package!

Is there any chance that the 'normal installation' will go on the basis of the software of this great LiveDVD?

It is a pity to install all this old software only to update to the new versions (especially openrc and baselayout, gcc and glibc, ...).

If this is not possible, I want to ask the question once more: is there a way to install from this LiveDVD?

The LiveDVD becomes obsolete after a few months so installing a Gentoo based of binpkgs generated from the LiveDVD is not recommended, however you can now get a sort of rapid binary install from the contents of the LiveDVD by either following one of the two methods mentioned below.

  • 1. cp -a / from LiveDVD environment on your hard drive
    2. setup grub,fstab & kernel
    3. emerge -C livecd-tools hwsetup
  • Follow the guide posted at http://tinyurl.com/65kz47g (Currently being updated for 11.0) to have full control of what packages you want installed versus having everything from first method above.

eitherway, I would still suggest doing a manual install and this will give you the experience for the future.

Thank you!

I install Gentoo on a regular basis - mostly on virtual machines. So I know that binpkgs are not what Gentoo is for. And that is the thing why I like Gentoo.
I will try the second mentioned method and hope to update this installation regularly.

Falmer,

The link likewhoa provided is for the 10.0 and 10.1 DVDs, For 11.0 this is the work in progress.

18 Packages will not install properly this way - they all depend on Python-2.6 which is not on the 11.0 DVD

Thanks NeddySeagoon,

I have to wait until a colleague got his new laptop for my next Gentoo installation.
Then I will try it from the DVD.

There are some little typos in this Howto.
Especially in Listing 4.11
Code:
while read pkg; do (quickpkg --include-config=y "${pkg})"; done  < <(qlist -CI)

it should be
Code:
while read pkg; do (quickpkg --include-config=y "${pkg}"); done  < <(qlist -CI)

Falmer,

Thanks - it took me half an hour to spot that when I was doing an update for 11.1-r3.
That all installs perfectly. The DVD is just missing a kernel source, or you could could do a networkless install from the DVD.

Thats promised is a later edition, as is pbzip2, which is bzip2 with threads. The install from the liveDVD spends most of its time running bzip2 ro pack and unpack things so pbzip2 will help on multi core/cpu systems.

Of course It can be installed from the live dvd environment, but you have to use gentoo handbook for that :

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/

One thing I would suggest is to make an easier way to install. I know you have custom stage 4 installs but this is when you already have it installed on your system. I have a feeling that a number of people will be leaving Ubuntu and you could pick up these users by making the install easier. I do not mean make it as easy as Ubuntu or others but create a stage install further down that would help those new to Gentoo get used to it. You could just put this in the guide and have them go to the spot necessary. You could them put a section after the install called optimization that you could point them to different sections in the guide so they can build their own kernel and other options. This would make it not so scary for new users and also get those that want to learn but do not want to build from stage 3. I know the last time I tried I was not successful but that was about a year ago.
