Hello,
New to gentoo here. I'm trying to get my xserver going but am having trouble.
I have tried running this command but it doesn't seem to help.
emerge -av `qlist -IC x11-drivers`
I am trying to use VGA-0 btw.

A bit more info;
The xorg logs these events as well. Perhaps they will be useful.

Your kernel is missing the radeon driver. |

Give the output of:
emerge -pv libdrm mesa xf86-video-ati
Which kernel do you use, and did you compile radeon support into the kernel? |

I'm using genkernel with the addition of tablet support.
emerge -pv libdrm mesa xf86-video-ati:
Code: | [ebuild R ] x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.22 USE="libkms static-libs" VIDEO_CARDS="radeon -intel -nouveau -vmware" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] media-libs/mesa-7.9 USE="classic gallium nptl -debug -gles -llvm -motif -pic (-selinux)" VIDEO_CARDS="radeon -intel -mach64 -mga -nouveau -r128 -savage -sis -tdfx -via -vmware" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-6.13.2 0 kB
Total: 3 packages (3 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 0 kB |

So I'm reading through http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Radeon and I don't understand what needs to be done.
My card is an AGP Radeon 9200. Should I use KMS or not?
Are these setting only if using KMS or do I need them anyways?

[*] Enable PCI quirk workarounds |
Including in kernel firmware blobs...I checked out /lib/firmware and I don't see anything relating to Radeon.
Do I need to add something and if so -- what?

# RadeonHD 5000, a.k.a Evergreen, and newer cards:

radeon/REDWOOD_me.bin

Do I need to enable /dev/agpart? I do have an AGP card but the part of the wiki page that says to enable it is only for Kernels <= 2.6.32.
I'm trying to compile 2.6.36.
I am a bit baffled but eager to learn more about how this all works.
I read Linux “Graphics Driver Stack” Explained and it was interesting but I'm not sure how to apply it. |

solved
from The X Server Configuration HOWTO

radeon/REDWOOD_me.bin radeon/REDWOOD_pfp.bin
radeon/REDWOOD_rlc.bin) External firmware blobs
(/lib/firmware/) Firmware blobs root directory
(Enable Radeon KMS support)
Device Drivers --->
Graphics support --->
<*> Direct Rendering Manager --->
<*> ATI Radeon
[*] Enable modesetting on radeon by default
Note: Old Radeon cards (X1900 series and older) don't need the radeon-ucode package or any firmware configuration. Just enable the Direct Rendering Manager and ATI Radeon modesetting. |
