I've installed the following Unix-like OS's in the last half-dozen years: Mandrake (now Mandriva), Debian, Ubuntu, Vector Linux, and FreeBSD. I had varying problems with all of them, usually most apparent after an upgrade. While trying (unsuccessfully) to get FreeBSD to run X on my old i810 card, I noticed gentoo forums had lots of solutions (which didn't work in FreeBSD).

So, I tried Gentoo, and now that I have (simply by following the handbook and X-Server HOWTO) gotten it installed on my old hardware pretty painlessly, it is definitely my favorite!

But how, you may ask, can you say you love Gentoo, and have confidence in it, after using it for less than a week?

Simple :D . The "build from the ground up" philosophy in the documentation-- making all the software from sources-- means that the documentation seems to stay pretty current, and is more explanatory. As an example, my Ubuntu broke during the upgrade from devfs to udev. I read enough to understand what udev was, and why devfs was going away. But, what was all this dbus and hal stuff, and what did these errors have to do with why X windows no longer loaded?

Gentoo's documentation answers those questions, and gentoo's design philosophy forces me to go one step at a time, as well as kind of requiring documentation geared at newbies also be step-by-step. That's a lot of work for you designers and documenters which has paid off for me. Thank you! My donation is forthcoming. I hope you take paypal.
