Hi,

For reasons that are long and complicated, I unmerged gcc and now I want it back since I have no C compiler.

I've scoured Google and this forum for help but a lot of it is very out of date or doesn't seem relevant anymore.

Anyway, I've tried unpacking a stage3 and manually copied every file associated with gcc (I just looked at the /etc/env.d/gcc/x86_64_gcc.... file for info) from the stage3 back onto my system but this didn't work.

When I try to emerge gcc, I get "C compiler cannot create executables".

I've made sure I've selected a profile with gcc-config as well.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Please have a look at this entry: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-827700-start-0.html

Does that help?

I did try that but to be hoenst I wasn't fully sure about what chithanh was saying :S

Best check this FAQ before unmerging anything which you did not install yourself.

Regarding your issue of unmerging gcc, extracting the tarball onto a system is not enough. You need to appropriately place it in /usr/portage/packages (best copy the whole directory from stage3 chroot) then run
Code:
emerge --usepkgonly gcc

The /usr/portage/packages directory doesn't exist in the stage3 I downloaded...

Any ideas?

You might also like the ROOT variable in make.conf.

That way you can boot into Gentoo live CD and emerge gcc using the GCC of the live cd.
