I'm using git-sources and genkernel. With 2.6.38 and above, you can select which type of kernel compression to support. I found this out while using #make oldconfig.

You need to select bzip2. If you are using an initrd, you will have to go in manually with #make menuconfig and make sure that initrd with bzip2 is selected.

Otherwise the kernel won't boot for you. I found this out the hard way.

It's a know problem of the kernel, not the compression used. You need to use 2.6.38_rc1-r1
