I have 3 similar computers, dual core, 2GB RAM, all running gentoo and kde with pretty much the same apps

When all 3 where using 32bit the memory usage -cache -buffers was a few hundred MB
Now with the 64bit machine its memory usage -cache -buffers is more then double, also on the 64bit machine when it was 32bit it used to use more available memory for buffers and cache, now that it has gone to 64bit it does not use as much ram for buffers, cache as it used to. Another thing is now the 64bit machine sometimes grinds to a halt (excessive memory and swap usage) when compiling certain packages that i can compile fine on the other machine

unfortunately that's a known problem with AMD64 / 64bit / intel64:
see in the AMD64 subforum:

AMD64 system slow/unresponsive during disk access (Part 2)

so basically - this is a loooooong story
