Got an old laptop here with a smashed screen I've been using as a server.
Just enough of the screen is usable (top left quarter) to do little things, so I keep this thing running as an ssh server.
Only one problem though, it wasn't meant for this and it doesn't do it much good. I need everything set to minimum and then to wake up when required.
Now, it's might have wake on lan in the bios... but I don't know because I haven't got an external monitor to plug in to find out. It's already auto booting and CPU scaled back to on demand... but that brings the CPU back to 1.2ghz and the fan still spins.
What do you suggest? |

Leaving the fan alone. Laptops are more prone to heat problems than towers and you don't want to burn out your CPU. They are generally hotter around the CPU because of the confined space, even with a lower CPU frequency. The fan might thus be working the way it's supposed to. Also, if it's an older laptop, the hardware might not be as responsive to APM and ACPI (the fan might be hardwired to remain on under all circumstances).
Of course, if you can get to an external monitor, you'll be able to find out more in the BIOS. Maybe a friend can bring one, or you can take the laptop over to a friend's place. _________________ decibel Linux: https://decibellinux.org

on a hunch I disabled bitcoin and that cooled it enough to rarely use the fan... top 's display is too wide to see the name of all the processes.... |

Bitcoin uses 100% cpu time.
And it really depends on model. I've seen laptops with fan going all the time and the ones which had it turned off more than 50% of time.
BTW Dust often accumulate between the fan and radiator therefore reducing it's cooling properties. If you can try removing the fan and do some cleaning. |
