This forum covers all Gentoo-related software not officially supported by Gentoo. Ebuilds/software posted here might harm the health and stability of your system(s), and are not supported by Gentoo developers. Bugs/errors caused by ebuilds from overlays.gentoo.org are covered by this forum, too.

why is udev pulling in systemd?

Code: Select all

e6400 ~ # emerge -1av sys-fs/udev

 * IMPORTANT: 6 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news to read news items.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies                                   ... done!
[ebuild N ] sys-apps/systemd-184-r1::gentoo-zh USE="acl pam tcpd -audit -coredump -cryptsetup -keymap -lzma -plymouth -quota (-selinux)" 0 kB
[ebuild     U  ] sys-fs/udev-184-r1::gentoo-zh [182-r3::gentoo] USE="gudev hwdb keymap openrc rule_generator -build -debug -doc -floppy -introspection (-selinux) -static-libs*" 0 kB

Code: Select all

>>> Installing (1 of 3) sys-apps/systemd-184-r1
 * This package will overwrite one or more files that may belong to other
 * packages (see list below). You can use a command such as `portageq
 * owners / <filename>` to identify the installed package that owns a
 * file. If portageq reports that only one package owns a file then do
 * NOT file a bug report. A bug report is only useful if it identifies at
 * least two or more packages that are known to install the same file(s).
 * If a collision occurs and you can not explain where the file came from
 * then you should simply ignore the collision since there is not enough
 * information to determine if a real problem exists. Please do NOT file
 * a bug report at http://bugs.gentoo.org unless you report exactly which
 * two packages install the same file(s). Once again, please do NOT file
 * a bug report unless you have completely understood the above message.

Upstream hasn't merged. Well, it has, but just at the source level. So right now you need to compile the whole thing, then pick the udev parts out of it. There's some preliminary patches around allowing you to compile only udev.

gentoo-zh overlay has merged it as it seems. Gentoo will give the user the choice with USE flag systemd .

You might want to post the output of emerge --info udev.
