My kdm_greet (login) screen is not the correct one. Its like its using the old login screen. And available session types are default and failsafe. Either one does NOT give me kde. It gives me a grey 'X' screen with a small terminal in the upper left corner.

If I go to a virtual console and 'killall kdeinit' then do a 'startx', kde starts normally, without a login screen. It goes straight to KDE.

I have been trying to resolve this issue for a week, searching through these forums, reading docs etc. But can't get past these issues. I have updated all my KDE packages to 3.0.2 and Qt as well. Any help is appreciated.

my guess is that you did not define kdm as the display manager-> look at your /etc/rc.conf file. make sure it contains the following line "DISPLAYMANAGER=kdm"

you will need to do a "rc-update add xdm default" at the command prompt if you wish to have it auto launch at startup.

the gentoo desktop guide explains how do do this. When in doubt: RTFM

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. I read the docs. That's why I'm posting the question. The rc.conf file is obviously the first place I looked.

okey-dokey. when you said your kdm_greet screen was the "old one", i assumed you meant that it was showing you the default XWindows manager (xdm).

We were already pursuing this issue through this thread:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=7758

Why don't we continue on the thread instead of starting a new one? Did any of the suggestions in the last response help?
