it's a rather dumb question, but i really would like to clarify it.
when emerging a newer version of kde does one have to do this from outside kde, i.e. in an xsession, or even from outside x? or would it be ok to emerge the new version from within the existing kde environment?

My experience both with emerge and with compiling kde from CVS is that you can do it from within kde.
