|
|
I have a big drive (hde) hooked to a Promise PCI Controller card. I was able to see the drive using the kernel from the CD image during the install. When I rebooted after installation, my compiled kernel cannot see hde. I probably didn't put an a star in the right box on the kernel config menu. I figure it is there because the install vanilla kernel had it. Tried downloading a vanilla kernel from kernel.org and could not get it to work.
Right now my boot and root partitions are on hdb1 and hdb2 so my install generally worked. The hde drive would be some extra storage. My hda drive is my Windows 98 C: drive.
Anybody know which configure box I have to put the star in? |

Star ?? Sounds like you want Mandrake forums ?
What is error message at bootup.
At install time, the "grub" command did not complain ?
Post contents of menu.lst (That's LIST) file
may be idea to also post (only drive report section)
contents of command " dmesg " (pipe it using "|less" to catch it all)
to show boot messages. |

|
|
During the installation, the kernel from the CD image had no trouble seeing hde through the Promise controller card. After the installation when I rebooted using my custom compiled kernel, attempts to mount hde1 resulted in the message that the drive did not exist.
I believe the driver for the Promise controller card is missing from my custom compiled kernel. I believe it is available through the "make menuconfig" GUI because the driver is obviously included in the CD image kernel (although I may be wrong).
Does anybody know how to configure the kernel to work with the Promise controller card? _________________ Mikey |

The Promise controller options in the kernel configuration look promising.
Under:
ATA/IDE/MFM/RLL support --->
IDE, ATA and ATAPI Block devices --->
PROMISE PDC202{46|62|65|67|68} support _________________ Cheers,

Hey Mikey ??
It's a Promise controller - they only made one ? used for
extra, raid, faster, on-board crapped out ?
I just had a look at my "menuconfig"
Below " telephony" enter ATA/IDE (etc) ----->>>>
one choice, ata/ide -- then enter more IDE related --->>>>
one choice, enhanced - before - large notation
See " Documentation IDE.txt"
under that is numerous options, of most interest
"Generic IDE support" and also "boot off-board chipset first "
If you have already compiled & enabled modules, see posting by "JAY"
and "Delta407" ? in install forum. about - changing symbolic link ,
using mrproper etc. at another compile. Maybe consider a clean re-install ?
If it is really hard or odd-ball, post your results to help anyone else.
BTW I was a HD diesel engine field service, all needed jnfo was for the owner's
benefit IE no input , no output |

Thought I had been all over those menus, but I missed the Promise item shown above.
Thanks Chris, I'll check it out. _________________ Mikey |
